TP 750,755,760 - Toshiba hard drives compatibility problem

Applicable to: World-Wide

Information :

Calls are coming in from customers who have purchased 2.5" hard drives from Toshiba, specifically their model # MK272OFC (1.35GB) and MK2101MAN(2.16GB) drives and asking for a "Thinkpad HDD case or housing" to mount the drive in.

These drives are the bare drive (with the 44 pin IDE connector facing outward (horizontally oriented pins) as opposed to the Thinkpad 750/755/760 series hard drive FRU that has the downward facing connector(vertically oriented pins).

The Thinkpad HDD configuration is provided by an IBM unique outer shell and connector which houses the hard drive. This outer shell is not available from IBM as a separate assembly.

The Toshiba HDD is not ThinkPad proven and is not supported by IBM for use on the ThinkPad. IBM can make no guarantee's as to whether or not the HDD is fully compatible. Therefore, if the HDD is not recognized in the ThinkPad, the customer should be informed of the latest BIOS, the available IBM Hard drives, and referred to Toshiba.

Any hardware related problems that are encountered while this drive is in use will not be covered under the IBM warranty if it is caused by the drive.

In any case, you should refer the caller back to where they purchased the drive or Toshiba.
