Aptiva - 2158/2163/2164 Considerations - Can't mute MIDI in Volume Control
Applicable to: World-Wide
Description:
The path for Wavetable MIDI between the playback and record mixers is disconnected. The user cannot record
using Wavetable MIDI as an input.
Models affected:
2158, 2163, and 2164
How to duplicate:
Play a MIDI file using MediaPlayer while recording using Sound Recorder; Playback the just recorded file; note
that no MIDI is heard.
1. Double click the Volume Control icon on Taskbar.
2. Click on Options menu and select Properties\Recording.
3. Set MIDI in "Mute".
4. Play a midi file such as the "Beethoven's Fur Elise.rmi".
5. Launch "Sound Recorder" and press "Record" button.
6. Mute function fail, it still can record successfully .
Root cause:
Windows 98 WDM audio has a limitation. The wave audio playback and record mixers are "locked" together. Whatever
you do to one affects the other in an identical manner. If you mute one the other is also muted. In order to provide a
workaround so that apps such as ViaVoice could mute playback and only have input from the mic ESS changed
their driver to "break" the wave record/playback path.
Workaround:
If a customer needs MIDI record the workaround is to select FM MIDI from control panel. It is expected that Microsoft
will provide a fix in their forthcoming Windows 98 service release.
