Aptiva - Hints for increasing system performance
Applicable to: World-Wide
One factor that may cause slow performance, on a P75 with 8 MB RAM and OS/2 Warp, is that the pre-loaded software includes sound events as the default. This requires loading sound files for every open window. Misplaced mouse clicks, and anything else that triggers a sound event, will use CPU cycles while the computer produces that sound. Although this is a nice feature, it drags down the performance of any 8 MB (or even 20 MB) machine. To disable sound events, go to the Sound icon in the System Setup window, which is in the OS/2 System window.
Although you can set each event to have no sound, this will not have the same effect as disconnecting system sounds altogether. To remove system sounds, go into the MMOS2\INSTALL directory and type "dinstsnd". This is a small command file that tells the workplace shell not to spend any resources on system sounds.
