Aptiva - 2144/2168 HP Deskjet 855C Install program lockup

Applicable to: United States

Deskjet Print Driver Installation for Windows 3.1 2144/2168 Mxx and Axx machines.

If you try to install the Deskjet Print Driver, and the system locks up on diskette 1, then you must do the following:

1. Go to Program Manager and select "File" "Run".
2. Type "win.ini" at the Command Line field.
3. Look for the following line:
run=C:\MWW\MANAGER\MWS.EXE C:\MWW\MODEM\MWMWIN.EXE C:\PS1TOOLS\AGUIDE.EXE
4. Insert a "; " before the "run=..." so that it says "; run=..."
5. Then do a "File" "Save" and "File" "Exit".
6. Go to Program Manager and select "File" "Run".
7. Type "system.ini" at the Command Line field.
8. Look for the following line:
comm.drv=C:\TCPDOS\BIN\comm.drv
9. Insert a "; " before the "comm.drv=C:\TCPDOS\BIN\comm.drv" so that it says "; comm.drv=C:\TCPDOS\BIN\comm.drv"
10. Look for the following line:
comm.drv=comm.drv
11. Remove the ";" before the "comm..." so that it says "comm..."
12. Then do a "File" "Save" and "File" "Exit".
13. Restart Windows.
14. Install Deskjet Driver per instructions.
15. Reverse the changes in all the files above.

For DeskJet 600 and/or 660C, install the Windows Drivers from the OS/2 side, i.e. from WIN-OS/2. No hangs, no ini files to mess with, then boot back to DOS/WIN.

And a TIP: If you are going print on your deskjet via WIN-OS2, remember to change the windows printer connection from LPT1 to LPT1.OS2 .... otherwise you will go through a tray of paper printing ASCII control codes one per sheet.
