Network Station - 5250 keyboard map: sharing map files

Applicable to: World-Wide

The Administrator can use the Network Station Manager (NSM) to designate a keyboard map file for all user profiles to use on all sessions to all AS/400 connections. Also, the administrator can do this on an individual basis, setting a keyboard map file for a certain user profile (any 5250 session opened by that user profile uses the map file designated).

Below, we have some steps to assist an administrator in setting up a shared keyboard map file.

Note: Administrators attempting to designate a keyboard map file for a user profile or all user profiles should remember that while in NSM you are only be able to see and/or access the keyboard map files that have been created by the user profile you used to sign on to NSM.

For additional 5250 keyboard mapping information, refer to the Knowledge Base Index of 5250 Keyboard Mapping Documents shown at the end of this document.

Create a DEFAULT Keyboard Map File

To create a default keyboard map file, do the following:

Start the Network Station with the same sign-on (user profile) that you will use to access the NSM. This user profile must have Security Officer authority for using the NSM (this is performed in a later step).

Start a 5250 session.

Use the menu bar to access the Option menu item, then select the Keyboard Remapping menu item.

Change the keyboard map as needed. Then, use the Save function to save the settings as a default keyboard map file.

Exit the Keyboard Remapping window.

Making Changes to NSM

Start the Network Station Manager program and sign-on with the same user profile you used to create the default keyboard map file. This user profile requires Security Officer authority to make changes to the System Defaults.

Click on the 5250 option from the left frame.

Choose the System Defaults, then click on Next. Or, if the administrator is setting a default map file for a certain user profile, use the User Defaults option to designate the user profile. Then, click on Next.

Near the upper right portion of the frame, you should see a set of fields under the title Default Keyboard File For. Each field allows you to designate the keyboard map file for each style of keyboard (101, 102, and so on). Use the pull-down button found in each field to scroll through the list of available files. If the pull-down-button does not react to the click, no files are available for that user profile for that style of keyboard.

Note: On this screen you also see a field for Key Remapping Capability. This field is used to limit access to the Keyboard Remapping function (this is discussed in another Knowledge Base document).

Using the pull-down button for the desired field, select the keyboard map file to be used as a default keyboard map file for all user profiles with this type of keyboard.

After the fields are designated, click on the Finish button.

Close the NSM (if needed).

Limit the Users (As Needed)

Now that the administrator has designated the default keyboard remap file, any user profile starting a Network Station 5250 session uses this keyboard map file, unless a different map file is found first using the File Search Order. This Search Order is mentioned in the note below, and it is discussed in a different Knowledge Base document.

If the administrator wants to force a user profile or all user profiles, to use the default keyboard map file that he has designated in the NSM, then two tasks must be explored: Removing the ability of the user profile (s to create keyboard map files and removing any existing keyboard map files. Limiting access to the keyboard mapping function and the process for deleting map files are discussed in other Knowledge Base documents.

Note: The keyboard mapping function employs a search operation to determine which keyboard map files are available and will choose a file based
on the results of that search. The search order utilized is as follows:

1. Session-Specific Map File
2. User-Desginated Default Map File
3. Administrator-Designated Map File for This User
4. Administrator-Designated Default Map File for All Users
5. IBM Default Settings

Therefore, the Administrator may designate a map file as the default map file for one or all users. However, if the user designated a map file, the keyboard mapper uses the user-designated file. In this situation, the administrator may want to limit access to the Keyboard Remapping function and/or delete some of the existing user-created map files.
