28.8/14.4 PCMCIA Data/Fax Modem w/Integrated DAA - Getting error 'in use by another device' on ThinkPad 385D

Applicable to: World-Wide

Problem:
Getting Error "In use by another device" on a Thinkpad 385D

Temporary Solution:

  1. Download the files 336mod03.exe and 336mdinf.exe.
  2. Build the 336MOD03.exe disk and extract the 336MDINF.exe to a temporary directory. Copy the INF to the 336MOD03 diskette.
  3. In Control Panel Modems remove all devices from the list.
  4. Click on add and select "other" "no" to the wizard and "have disk".
  5. Insert the modified diskette and let the modem install on COM2.
  6. Remove the PCMCIA device from the Thinkpad and reinsert. (It will automatically detect a PCMCIA_28.8_DATA/FAX MODEM.)
  7. Don't worry about having both devices in the list...leave them as is.
  8. Choose the 33.6 modem when using applications and everything will work.
