TP 365X/XD,380,560,755,760,765,770 - Applying Service Pack 3 causes Infrared Errors in Event Viewer under Windows NT 4.0

Applicable to: World-Wide

This was tested on a 560X with the i/r drivers irtpgwnt, version 1.11. These infrared drivers are common to all Thinkpads for NT.

SYMPTOM: After applying Service Pack 3, the following stop errors appear in Event Viewer:

-A conflict has been detected between 2 drivers which claimed 2 overlapping io port regions. Driver serial, with device <\device\infraRedPort. Translated.> claimed an io port range with starting address in data address (then gives the addresses) and length in data address (then gives address.)

-A conflict has been detected between 2 drivers which claimed 2 overlapping io port regions. Driver irda_phy, with device <. Translated.> claimed an io port range with starting address in data address (then gives the addresses) and length in data address (then gives address.)

-The hardware resources for COM are already in use by another device.

SOLUTION:
The IBM infrared driver updates the file serial.sys in the winnt\system32\drivers directory. Installing Service Pack 3 puts back the NT driver and causes errors when the infrared devices try to load. The Service Pack file is dated 4/30/97, size 45,296; the IBM file is 7/31/97, size 47,056.

WORKAROUND:
If the customer is not going to use infrared, create the Infrared Features diskette and deinstall the driver since it takes control of the com port settings. If the customer wants infrared, simply reinstall the driver from the Infrared Features diskette and when prompted whether to use the current driver or a new driver, choose new. Either one will get rid of the errors.
