Aptiva - MPEG Failures on Goober Planars

Abstract:
A small number of Goober planars have a flaw which causes MPEG playback to be distorted. This flaw is described by the video being extremely dark and colors muted to close to the color black.

Failure Symptoms:
ALL of the following must be true in order to conclude this defect is the problem:
INDEO and AVI playback works and MPEG fails.
Planar video will operate correctly in all resolutions/colors with AVI's, bitmaps etc.
When playing a preloaded MPEG such as Silent Steel or "Flight to the Moon" video CD, the color is mixed and appears to be saturated. The best way to describe this is "psychedelic". The problem can also be manifested as horizontal green or fuchsia bars which appear in the playback area.

Diagnostics:
Upgrade to the most recent version of BIOS at least BIOS Revision K.

Upgrade to the most recent version of video driver and MPEG driver at least Revision v1.21 for Windows 95 or the MPEG upgrade disk shipped with Windows 3.11 systems.

Run preloaded diagnostics supplied diagnostics with HMS version H and I or QA Plus 5.2 does not find errors a defect.

Background Information:
All FRU motherboards were being re-worked as of 3/1/97. The field exposure should be progressively minimal as time goes by from that date.

Solution:
Calltakers should have the system unit replaced. Servicers should have the planar replaced as appropriate to service practice in their area.
