PC Server 300 - Network error on 8640 with Novell and 3COM Ethernet adapter
Applicable to: World-Wide
Symptom:
The following NetWare error message is received: "Failure Reading Device Network, Abort, Retry or Fail," on the NetWare client system.
Problem Isolation Aids:
All the following must apply:
1. The system is a Server 300 (8640) with either the IBM Fast or F/W SCSI controller and a 3COM PCI Ethernet Adapter (3C59x) installed.
2. The operating system is Novell NetWare.
Fix:
The following actions should resolve the problem:
1. Install device drivers for the 3COM PCI Ethernet Adapter (3C59x) dated 6/95 or later.
2. The latest flash BIOS should be installed on the Server 300 as follows:
8640-0Nx (DX2) BIOS T55 or later (300BIOSN.DSK )
8640-0Px (Pentium) BIOS T53 or later (300BIOSP.DSK)

Important:
1. Use care when installing a Flash/BIOS revision. The BIOS code is specific to each type system board. If a 486 BIOS is installed on a Pentium system board, or vice-versa, the system will hang with no method to recover other than system board FRU replacement or by requesting a BIOS module replacement from the HELPCENTER.
2. Flash Updates are customer installable. Customers should review the 'README' file located on the diskette for installation information. Contact the Personal Systems HelpCentre (US only) on 1-800-772-2227 if assistance is required in obtaining or installing this BIOS upgrade. All other countries are advised to contact their local PC Support Centre for assistance.
