Aptiva - Amplifier tier setting updates

Applicable to: World-Wide

Purpose of updates:
In order for the Bose Sound system on your computer to work properly, the BIOS setting for the Amplifier card must match the card which is actually installed in the machine. The setting will match unless the system board (planar) has been replaced.

Warnings:
1. This update cannot be run inside Windows 95. If this update is applied from within Windows, it will severely damage the system BIOS and require the system board to be replaced.

2. Care must be taken to make certain that the BIOS setting matches the actual Amplifier card installed. The sound system will not function properly with incorrect setting.

How to apply:
Determine the type of Amplifier installed:

1. Look at the rear of the computer, where the purple speaker wire from the monitor is connected.

2. If there is ONLY one (1) purple connector, then the Amplifier is a "TIER-1" type card.

3. If there are TWO (2) connectors, one purple and one pink (for the base module), then the card is a "TIER-2".

Determine the system BIOS setting for the card:

1. Reboot the computer to a "Safe Mode Command Prompt". To do this, follow these steps:
a. Click "START", click "RESTART THE COMPUTER. Click "YES"

b. When you see "Starting Windows 95" in the TOP LEFT corner of the screen, press the -F8- key.

c. Select "Safe Mode Command Prompt Only" from the menu.

d. At the C:> prompt, type "DEBUG" and press the ENTER key.

e. You will then have a "-" prompt. Type the following: "d fffa:0"

f. Press the ENTER key. The system will display information from the BIOS settings. On the right side of screen you will see the system Serial number (23A????), "TIERx_AUDIO", and the system Model number (214????).

g.. The number "x" above in the "TIERx_AUDIO" setting denotes which Amplifier card the system is set to use.

2. If the type of card installed, matches the type listed in the steps above, NO ACTION IS NEEDED.

3. If you do NOT have a model 2116(MM55) or 2128 (MM75) monitor connected to the system, you MUST set the BIOS to a "TIER-0" setting. To do this, boot from the Diagnostic & Utility CD, then press "O" (zero) at the Menu to exit to a DOS prompt and run 'G:\DISK\CRYSTAL\CLYDE\RCAND15\INSTALL\DISK0\TIER0.BAT'. Skip Step#4 below and proceed to Step#5.

Note: Theses systems were designed for use with the MM55 and MM75 monitors ONLY. Using a different monitor with this system will cause various sound and functionality problems.

4. If the type of card installed DOES NOT MATCH the type listed in the steps above, then you must run the appropriate update to correct the error.

a. If you have a "TIER-1" type card installed, reboot from the Diagnostic & Utility CD, then press "O" (zero) at the Menu to exit to a DOS prompt, then run 'G:\DISK\CRYSTAL\CLYDE\RCAND15\INSTALL\DISK0\TIER1.BAT'.

b. If you have a "TIER-2" type card installed, reboot from the Diagnostic & Utility CD, then press "O" (zero) at the Menu to exit to a DOS prompt, then run 'G:\DISK\CRYSTAL\CLYDE\RCAND15\INSTALL\DISK0\TIER2.BAT'.

5. Restart the computer and repeat the "Determine the system BIOS setting for the card:" steps to make certain the setting now matches the card type installed.
