OPERATING ENVIRONMENT: IBM ThinkPad computers are designed, built, and tested for high quality and reliability. When used properly in standard business environments, a ThinkPad system should be a reliable computing
asset for many years. However, harsh environments and abuse can damage ThinkPad systems since they are not intended to withstand extreme temperatures, dust, shock, or other severe physical environments. ThinkPad systems should not be used in unsuitable environments. For example, a ThinkPad system should not be used in non-stationary environments, such as in-vehicle installations, without additional casing or shock dissipation. IBM warrants that the ThinkPad system will conform to its Official Published Specifications when used in a suitable physical operating environment.

Refer to the Sales Manual pages, or the External Attachment pages, or contact your IBM representative, for a list of supported features and options and compatible IBM and vendor software. The Sales Manual is updated periodically.
The IBM ThinkPad 560X HPA model systems contain BIOS/Easy Setup/Diagnostics in their Flash ROM and also provide a GUI to set up the system and power management features for OS/2 and Windows users. BIOS provides the hardware instructions and interfaces designed to maintain compatibility with many software programs currently operating under
DOS and OS/2 on the Personal Computer XT, Personal Computer AT, and the PS/2 family.
LIMITATIONS:
WINDOWS 95 LIMITATIONS
When suspend is attempted with a USB camera attached, the suspend will fail and the camera will be disabled. If this happens, unplug the camera from the USB port and plug it in again. The camera will then be re-enabled.
When one CardBus card is already configured in the system slot or port replicator slot, the second CardBus card must be configured using the system icon in Control Panel. The second CardBus card cannot be configured automatically.
OS/2 LIMITATIONS
When using Warp Version 4, FixPak FX_M002, or later, is required.
Hibernation is not supported when the drive is formatted in HPFS on a system that has more than 64 MB of memory.
OS/2 Digital Video Player may fail to play some AVI format video files.
Switching the display devices from CRT to LCD is not supported in 1280 x 1024 or 1600 x 1200 resolutions.
If the COM port is configured correctly, but does not work, do the following:
Go to System Setup
Select Hardware Manager
Select Folder from the menu item
Select Properties
Under the default pulldown menu, select "NO HARDWARE DETECTION" (or change the setting if "NO HARDWARE DETECTION" is already selected)
Go to ThinkPad Configuration
Set up COM port as you want
Reboot the system
Video window does not fit in the frame, when using 640 x 480 desktop with expansion.
Customer work around:
1. Do not use Screen Expansion or
2. Use 800 x 600 screen
Screen sometimes freezes after changing video vertical refresh rate.
Customer work around:
Boot twice after refresh rate is changed
Use refresh rate change panel in OS/2 itself
WINDOWS NT WORKSTATION LIMITATIONS
Hibernation is not supported in Windows NT 4.0 when the drive is formatted for NTFS.
SUSPEND/RESUME LIMITATIONS
RI resume is only supported in CardSoft mode with CardWorks under Windows 95.
The system will go to suspend if any PCMCIA communication cards, including the following, are used.
IBM 3270 Emulation Credit Card Adapter
IBM 5250 Emulation Credit Card Adapter
IBM Token-Ring 16/4 Credit Card Adapter
IBM Credit Card Adapter for Ethernet
Do not remove or install PC cards during suspend mode.
If the system is suspended/resumed during the following operations, unpredictable results may occur.
Audio record or playback
Video record or playback
Playback of MPEG file, AVI file, video CD, CD-i
Active communications (PCMCIA modem) in OS/2 applications may hang
DOS games
Under Window NT 4.0, ATA cards do not go into suspend/hibernate if the ATA card is mounted in AC mode.
OTHER LIMITATIONS
LANDesk Client Manager (LDCM) cannot be installed if NetFinity has already been installed. NetFinity and LDCM may conflict with each other.
When USB is disabled/enabled by Windows 95 Device Manager, the system needs to be restarted. If the system is not restarted, suspension/hibernation may cause the system to hang or halt.
The Windows 95 Control Panel should be used to stop PC Cards before entering suspend. If a PC Card is stopped with CardWizard before entering suspend, CardWizard may not recognize the PC Card status correctly, which may cause mis-operation if the PC Card is removed from the slot.
When using communication cards, it is recommended to set the Power Management Mode to "High performance" or "Max (in Customized)." Otherwise, some communication cards may fail.
CardBus cards which do not support CCLKRUN# may not work correctly.
PCMCIA LIMITATIONS
PC card point enablers may write directly to the hardware, bypassing Socket and Card Services. Writing directly to the hardware can cause problems that cannot be anticipated. Point enablers can also interfere with client device drivers that communicate with Socket and Card Services. Additional customer testing in the specific environments is recommended.
When installing two type II PCMCIA communications cards in the PCMCIA slot, there may be cable interference that allows only one card to be used.
When using an IBM PCMCIA Token-Ring card under Windows NT 4.0, use the Token-Ring device driver IBM provides, not the Microsoft native PCMCIA Token-Ring driver.
WINDOWS 95
If CardBus card is in use, no other PCMCIA card may be hot plugged.
A newly inserted CardBus PC Card may not be recognized correctly by Windows 95 (Windows 95 may mistake it for a previously installed CardBus PC card). If this happens, do the following:
Open My Computer, Control Panel, and then System folder.
Click on the Device Manager Tab.
Select the device that is no longer being used.
Remove it.
Restart the system.
CardWorks does not work on Windows 95 OSR0.
If "TDK Network Flyer CardBus LAN Adapter" (TDK 100Base CardBus Card) is used in the ThinkPad Enhanced Port Replicator CardBus slot, the properties need to be changed as follows:
Open "Control Panel"
Open "Network"
Select "TDK Network Flyer CardBus LAN Adapter" in installed network components list
Then click "Property," so TDK LAN adapter property box will appear
Click "Advanced"
Select "Burst Length" in Property
And change a Value to 4 DWORD
Then click "OK"
Click again "OK"
And restart a computer
WINDOWS NT
Multifunction PC cards are not supported in the system.
RI resume is not supported with CardWizard under Windows NT 4.0.
3270 Emulation card and 5250 Emulation card do not work with CardWizard under Windows NT 4.0.
ATA Boot is not supported under Windows NT 4.0.
ZV Card is not supported under Windows NT 4.0.
OS/2
CardBus PC Cards are not supported in the system.
ZV Card is not supported under OS/2.
OTHER TIPS AND HINTS
Video performance will be reduced when operating under the 64 K or 16 M color mode.
The system is designed so that the customer may install or remove the PCMCIA card without turning off the system if the PCMCIA card supports this function. Refer to the instructions that come with the PCMCIA card.
PLANNING INFORMATION
CABLE ORDERS: All cables are included with the system.
INSTALLABILITY: The IBM ThinkPad 560X HPA model systems require about 20 minutes for installation. Installation includes unpacking, setting up, and powering on the system. Additional time is required to install other memory and other optional features.
SECURITY, AUDITABILITY, AND CONTROL
STANDARD SECURITY FEATURES: The electronic personalization feature is like a name tag on your ThinkPad computer. Your name, contact address, or phone number can be displayed on the screen when the system is turned
on. This helps in case the ThinkPad computer is misplaced. The personal data is stored in the system's non-volatile memory and is displayed with a password prompt.
Passwords
A power-on password (POP) protects the system from unauthorized use.
If a POP is set, the password prompt appears:
Each time the system is turned on
When the system is returned to normal operation from suspend mode
A HDD Password (HDP) protects HDD data from unauthorized users.
Once the HDP is set, data on the HDD cannot be accessed without the correct HDP. Because the HDP is stored on the HDD, the data remains protected even if the HDD is removed to another system. The HDP password prompt appears:
Each time the system is turned on
When the system is returned to normal operation from suspend mode
The user can attach a Compu-Lock, Kensington lock, or similar device to the keyhole on the back of the computer. This prevents the keyboard from opening and secures the internal devices under the keyboard. It also allows tethering the system to an immovable object to make it secure.
The customer is responsible for evaluation, selection, and implementation of security features, administrative procedures, and appropriate controls in application systems and communications facilities.

WARRANTY SERVICE
Customer Carry-in Repair (CCR) or ThinkPad EasyServ: Warranty service for the IBM ThinkPad 560X HPA model will be provided by ThinkPad EasyServ or Customer Carry-in to an authorized dealer/remarketer.
ThinkPad EasyServ is a courier repair service in which the ThinkPad system will be picked up at the customer's location and delivered to a IBM designated repair location. The repair location will repair the system and return it to the customer. Charges for the courier service will be paid by IBM.
If warranty service is required, the customer should call the IBM HelpCenter at 800-772-2227, in the U.S. The HelpCenter will assist the user with problem isolation for both hardware and software. Should a hardware problem be identified the HelpCenter will arrange for a courier to pick up the system for overnight delivery (where available) to the repair location. Most repairs should be made the same day the system is received at the repair location. Customers should keep the original shipping carton for shipping to the repair location. If the original shipping carton is not available, the courier will deliver a shipping carton and return to pick up the system for delivery to the repair location.
ThinkPad EasyServ is available in the U.S., Canada, and Mexico.
INTERNATIONAL WARRANTY SERVICE: Customers who travel or need to move products to another country will be able to register the products for IBM International Warranty Service. Upon registering with the International Warranty Service Office (IWSO), IBM will issue an International Warranty Service Certificate that will be honored virtually worldwide,
where IBM or IBM resellers sell and service IBM PC products. During the original warranty period, customers will be provided service through the service delivery methods available for their specific IBM system in the servicing country.
For more information on IBM International Warranty Service in the United States and Canada, or to register your IBM PC systems, contact IBM at 800-IWS-7426 (497-7426). Reference IBM International Warranty Service announcement letter PCC94-516 or Marketing Announcement 694-028, dated October 17, 1994.
