ThinkPad 770 - Read Me First! Notes for Windows NT

Overview

This read me file contains important information on the following topics:
Erratic Mouse Pointer Movement
Windows NT 4.0 Configuration
The I386 Directory Structure
The SP3 Directory Structure
Hot Swapping UltraBay Devices
Diskette Factory
Installable Applications

Erratic Mouse Pointer Movement

The Mouse Pointer may move erratically around the display and simulate right button depressions. This occurs when the TrackPoint is moved while the TrackPoint driver is being initialized. When this occurs, don't touch your TrackPoint device for about 10 seconds. The erratic movement should stop and the TrackPoint device will be fully functional. This situation only occurs at system boot time. If you don't use your TrackPoint until the TrackPoint icon is displayed in the lower right corner of your display, then you should not experience this problem.

Windows NT 4.0 Configuration

Your ThinkPad 770 system has been preloaded with Windows NT 4.0 plus Service Pack 3 (SP3).
For your convenience, the I386 and the SP3 directory structures have been placed on your C: drive partition. Please look at the following two (2) sections for more important information.

The I386 Directory Structure

When you modify your system configuration, Windows NT may require the installation of additional components. These components may be provided by the manufacturer of your new hardware (ie., PCMCIA cards) via diskettes, or it may be available from Microsoft on your Windows NT CD-ROM. Instead of using the Windows NT CD-ROM, you can use the I386 directory structure which has been preloaded on your C: drive partition. These files are located in the C:\I386 directory. The Windows NT version of this directory structure is Service Release 1 (SR1). Since your Windows NT system is at a Service Pack 3 (SP3) level, you must reapply the SP3 update whenever any files are installed on your Windows NT system from either the C:\I386 directory structure or from the Windows NT CD-ROM. This must be done before you reboot your ThinkPad 770 system! Please read the next section on applying the SP3 update.

The SP3 Directory Structure

Whenever Windows NT components are installed from the Windows NT CD-ROM or from the C:\I386 directory, the SP3 update must be applied. This SP3 update must be applied before the Windows NT system is shut down or Windows NT on your ThinkPad 770 system might not start successfully. The reason is that both the Windows NT Compact Disk and the C:\I386 directory structure are at a Windows NT 4.0 plus Service Release 1 level (or earlier).

In order to apply the SP3 update, double click on the "Apply the Service Pack 3 Update" icon on your desktop. When the following popup message is displayed,

C:\WINNT\System32\DRIVERS\PCMCIA.SYS

This file has been identified as an OEM-installed file.
Would you like to overwrite the version of the file on your system with the Service Pack version?

click on "No" so that the SystemSoft CardWizard PCMCIA support is not disabled.

Hot Swapping UltraBay Devices

Hot swapping of UltraBay devices (such as the CD-ROM drive and the Diskette drive) is supported by your ThinkPad 770 Windows NT system. In order for hot swapping to occur, the CD-ROM drive must be installed in the UltraBay when the Windows NT system is booted. To enable UltraBay hot swap support, open the ThinkPad icon on your desktop and then open the ThinkPad Configuration icon in the ThinkPad folder. Select the UltraBay icon in the ThinkPad Configuration window, then select the "Enable UltraBay FDD warm attach" option, click on "OK", close all windows and restart your Windows NT system. You can now hot swap between the CD-ROM drive and the Diskette drive after suspending your ThinkPad 770 system. This can be accomplished by closing the lid on your system, waiting ten (10) seconds, swapping the drives and then opening the lid on your system.

Diskette Factory

Diskette Factory can be used to create device driver and application diskettes for Windows NT. It can also be used to create device driver diskettes for Windows 95, OS/2, DOS and Windows 3.11 systems. One of the peculiarities of Diskette Factory is that, under certain conditions, it appears that it never completes. This occurs when the DOS window (that creates the diskettes) does not gain the focus. To get around this problem, just move the mouse pointer off of the Diskette Factory window. The DOS window or the Diskette Factory completion window should then be visible. Just click on "OK" when the Diskette Factory completion window appears. Since Diskette Factory does NOT format diskettes, you must use clean, formatted diskettes as instructed!

Installable Applications

For your convenience, the IBM AntiVirus program and the ConfigSafe program have been loaded on your ThinkPad 770 system in an installable format (ie. you do not need to create these diskettes via Diskette Factory). The Installable Applications icon has been placed on your desktop. Open this folder and select the desired icon (in this folder) to install the IBM AntiVirus program and/or the ConfigSafe program. Both programs provide an entry on the Start bar to remove them, if desired.
