TP 770/E/ED - Attaching your system to a Dolby Digital SRS amplifier

Applicable to: World-Wide

SYMPTOM:
Attaching a ThinkPad 770 to a Dolby Digital SRS amplifier for DVD playback.

CONFIGURATION:
Any ThinkPad 770, 770E or 770ED with the DVD-ROM and Enhanced Video adapter installed.

SOLUTION:
The ThinkPad 770 can be used in conjunction with an external Digital enabled receiver to playback 6 discreet audio channels. The Dolby Digital SRS sound system is only supported when playing DVD-ROM movies.

Connecting Digital Audio:

1. Connect a video adapter cable to the Dolby Digital output jack on the ThinkPad's Enhanced Video adapter.
(This is the same adapter that you would use for video-in/out)

2. Connect a cable from the digital receiver to the yellow plug on that adapter. (A standard video cable with the yellow connector will work fine. Consult a audio / video speciality store for more advanced high fidelity cabling solutions)

Besides having the right cables, you also need to ensure that you enable the Dolby Digital out. To enable sound on the Dolby Digital Processor, do the following (these steps are also located in the user's manual that came with the DVD player):

1.) Select My Computer, Control Panel, Multimedia Properties, Advanced, Media Control Device, and IBM MPEG File/ISO9660[mci]. The MPEG Properties window appears.
2.) Select Setting. The Settings Window appears.
3.) Select Digital Audio Out and OK.

If you want to listen to a DVD movie later on your ThinkPad, you need to be sure to reverse the procedure above to disable the Dolby Digital out. Otherwise, when you go to listen to a DVD movie on your ThinkPad, you will not hear any audio.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:
The ThinkPad only ships with one conversion cable. If you want to view your DVD movie on a television at the same time you listen to digital audio, you need to get a second video adapter cable. The part number for the cable is 85G1880 (FRU 85G1897).

For more information about the ThinkPad 770 Audio functions and cabling diagrams see the 770 Audio Fact sheet.
