Aptiva - Using the FILES Command
Applicable to: World-Wide
The FILES command allows you to specify the maximum number of files that can be open at the same time. Some applications have their own internal limits. Some versions of Microsoft Works, for example, only allow 8 files to be open at the same time. That number is determined by the application and cannot be changed. With DOS, however, you can specify how many files can be open. The maximum number of open files that DOS can have is 255.
The FILES command is a configuration command and is inserted as a line in the CONFIG.SYS file. The syntax is as follows:
FILES=x
x = specifies a number from 8 through 255.
The default value is 8. If you do not have a FILES= line in your CONFIG.SYS file, eight files is the maximum number of open files that you can have. This default value is sufficient for the majority of applications.
NOTE: For every incremental increase over 8, the resident portion of DOS increases in size, leaving you less conventional memory free for your applications. Therefore, a very large number for the FILES command is not recommended.
