TP 600,770/ED/X/Z - DUN fails after removing IE 4.0

SYMPTOM:
After uninstalling IE 4.0, Dial-Up Networking (DUN) no longer functions properly.

CONFIGURATION:
ThinkPad 600 or 770 series with the ACP modem running Windows 95 OSR2.1 where IE 4.0 was uninstalled.

Note: Not all ThinkPad 600 and 770's come with an ACP modem.

SOLUTION:
There are two possible ways to correct this symptom:
1. Create a new DUN connection to correct the telephone.ini file.
2. Recreate the telephone.ini file:

• Rename the Telephon.ini file (if it exists) in the Windows folder to Telephon.old. For information about how to rename a file, click Start, click Help, click the Index tab, type "renaming" (without quotation marks), and then double-click the "Renaming Files" topic.
• Restart your computer.
• Double-click the Tapiini.exe file in the Windows\System folder. Note that this program runs very quickly; nothing may appear to happen. If you are not sure, check the Windows folder to verify that a Telephon.ini file was created.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:
The uninstallation process of IE 4.0 modifies the telephone.ini file (this file is required for use with DUN) that prevents the DUN from dialling out. For additional information on recreating the telephone.ini file, refer to MS article Q120221 or Q189388 on the Microsoft web site (http://www.microsoft.com).
