Aptiva - How to ensure hard drive is in startup sequence

1. Power-on computer. When you see the large blue "IBM" on the screen, press the F1 key. This will take you to the IBM Surepath Setup Utility main menu.
2. At the Surepath Utility screen, press the down-arrow key until "Startup Options" is highlighted. Press the "Enter" key.
3. At the "Startup Options" window you can view the present startup options. The first startup device should be "Diskette Drive A." The second startup device should be either CD-ROM or the Hard Disk, depending whether or not your system can boot with a CD. If system is bootable with a CD, the second device will include the CD-ROM drive and the third device will be the Hard Drive. The "Mxx" and "Axx' series should have Hard Disk One as the second startup device. The 2134, 2140, 2142, 2159, 2161, 2162, and 2176 systems should have the second startup device set to the CD-ROM and the third startup device as Hard Disk One. The 2136, 2137, and 2138 systems has a different startup options menu. It should show "System Boot Drive - Drive A then Drive C." Beneath that line should show "Boot from CD-ROM - Enabled."
4. At this point you may choose to load the original system settings (which may or may not change the present settings) or you may choose to manually load specific settings. To load original system settings, press "Esc" to return to main menu, F5 to load system settings, "Enter" to 'Load Factory Settings, "Esc" to leave main menu, "Enter" for "Yes, save and exit Setup Utility."
5. To manually change startup options, arrow up or down to whichever startup device that you wish to change. Press the right or left "arrow" key to change to desired startup option.
