Aptiva - Installing WinFax Lite

If you have a fax/modem installed in your system and you are trying to install the WinFAX Lite software package, follow these instructions to set up and use the WinFAX Lite package.
To install the WinFAX Lite software on your system:
1. Power on your system and enter Windows, or CLOSE any communications applications (e.g., PRODIGY, AMERICA ONLINE, or other service).
2. Insert the WinFAX Lite installation diskette in your floppy drive.
3. From the PROGRAM MANAGER, choose the FILE menu and then choose RUN.
4. In the COMMAND LINE: box, type the following and then press Enter:
A:INSTALL
You will be told that WinFAX Lite is being installed and being setup as a printer in your Windows environment.
5. Click on OK (to proceed) or CANCEL (to leave the install process).
6. Choose the COM port where your modem is attached (usually COM1). If you wish to use WinFAX Lite as your ONLY printer, check the box labeled "Select WinFax as default printer".
NOTE: If you are presented with the SUPPORTED FAX MODEMS listing, one of two things have happened.
A) - your modem is not attached to COM1, or
B) - your modem does not have a recognizable FAX signature.
If A, check your modem port choice.
If B, scroll down the list and choose: CLASS 1 SEND/RECEIVE (or, if listed, GVC FM-9648/24H or GVC FM-14400), then click on OK.
7. You will be asked the location of your Windows directory (default C:\WINDOWS); verify and click on OK.
8. Next you will be asked the location to Install Phonebook and Status Files (default C:\WINDOWS\WINFAX); verify or change and click on OK.
NOTES:
a) If you are prompted to DELETE EXISTING PHONEBOOK, either you or someone else has installed WinFAX Lite before. Answer this question according to your preference.
b) If you are asked to DELETE OLD STATUS LOG, either you or someone else has installed or used WinFAX Lite before. Answer this question according to your preference.
9. You will receive a message about the DOS TSR for WinFAX Lite. Consult your manual on RECEIVING FAXES for the proper setup of this feature.
After all the files have been installed, you will be presented with the WinFAX Lite Setup window. Take the following steps to setup and customize the WinFAX Lite software for your use.
1. PAPER SIZE: is the same as your PRINTER setup (usually 8.5 x 11 inches)
2. DEFAULT RESOLUTION: for best resolution, choose HIGH (print and send/receive will be slower). LOW (faster printing and send/receive, less detail).
3. ORIENTATION: Choose as per your needs. Some applications, require you to modify your PAGE SETUP to take advantage of the Orientation.
4. DISPLAY CALL PROGRESS: If this box is checked (has an X), your call progress will be displayed from connection to completion. Next click on the MORE... button to fill in the following:
5. SPEAKER MODE: defaults to ON, most people change to UNTIL CONNECTED.
6. MODEM SETUP:
Detect Busy Tone ... Should be YES (or has an X)
Detect Dial Tone ... Should be YES (or has an X)
Pulse Dial ... Only if your calling area does not support tone
Dial Retries ... Usually 3 (default 0)
Dial Prefix ... If you have to dial 9 or another number to reach an outside line
Retry Time ... Usually 60 seconds
Init String ... Should be ATS7=90 only!!
7. FAX HEADER: Depends on the user, the variables are listed in your WinFax Manual. A sample setup is as follows:
LEFT: Date $D Time $T
CENTER: This FAX was sent by $S
RIGHT: Page $P of $N
8. STATION IDENTIFIER: Phone number of the FAX/Modem sending the FAX (i.e., your phone number).
9. SENDER NAME: Your Name. The variable $S uses this information.
10. Click on the OK button, then Click on OK again.
Congratulations!! Your WinFAX Lite application is now set up and installed.
If you have problems with any of the installation instructions that leads you to believe that your modem is at fault, you will need to contact the IBM HelpCenter at (800) 772-2227 or your modem manufacturer if you have added another third party FAX/Modem.
