Aptiva - Update Connector comprehensive fix sheet

This document outlines possible problems encountered as a result of using Update Connector. Update Connector is a product offered by IBM which automatically installs software patches and upgrades on user's computers. If errors are encountered while attempting to run Update Connector, this sheet will outline actions for the user to take to correct the problem.

Note: It is not necessary to run Update Connector every day, or every week. Fixes are posted as they are made available. IBM recommends using Update Connector about every month, to every other month.

Change Dir Failed Error:
This error is caused by the server code not running. Try connecting to the server at a later time. The server is monitored by IBM Technicians and will be restarted in a short amount of time.

Error in loading DLL Error:
The following will need to be changed if Update Connector is upgraded from version 1.00 to 1.02
WARNING: The following lines ARE case sensitive! (JAVA uses upper and lower case.)

Type the following at the MS DOS Prompt:

Type: CD\UPDATER\JAVA\LIB and hit "Enter"
Type: RENAME SSCLAS~1.ZIP SSCLASSES.ZIP and hit "Enter"
Type: CD\UPDATER and hit "Enter"
Type: RENAME IBM_UP~1.DLL ibm_upgrader_tools.dll and hit "Enter" (note it has lower case)
NOTE: Depending on which version of Update Connector installed, you may receive an error at this point... please ignore the error if you do get it.
Type: RENAME COMMON~1.DLL CommonTools.dll and hit "Enter" (note it has lower case)

Improper Local Access Number in IBM Update Connector
If a customer is not able to connect to IBM Update Connector with the local access number provided, use "Local Number Is Not On List" which will use the default 1-800 number to dial in and connect. Once connected, Update Connector will download a new list of local access numbers. Please change to the appropriate local access number for the next connection.

Runtime Errors:

Runtime Error 5
Runtime Error 5 usually occurs when there is insufficient system memory to run IBM Update Connector. Shut down any active programs and restart Update Connector. If this error persists, restart Windows 95 and run Update Connector immediately after the reboot.

Runtime Error 438
To correct the Runtime 438 error, type the following at the MS-DOS prompt:
c:\windows\system\regsvr32.exe /s c:\updater\comctl32.ocx and press "Enter".

Runtime Error 21047
This error will occur if one of the two scenarios is true:
1. The Dial-Up Networking Software has been un-installed.
2. TCP/IP protocol has been removed, or is incorrectly configured. To solve this error, reinstall the Dial-Up Networking Software or the TCP/IP protocol under Control Panel's Networking Icon. Dial-up Networking can be re-installed through the Windows Setup section of Add/Remove Programs in Control Panel.

Runtime Error 31037, Runtime Error -1 (fffffffffff)
The cause of this error is a missing c:\windows\system\webster.ocx file. To resolve this problem, restore the windows\system\webster.ocx file using APTRSTOR.EXE and the Recovery CD-ROM. If you do not have the APTRSTOR.EXE program, you can download it by clicking here - . If you cannot connect to Update Connector after restoring this file, restore the "UPDATER" directory completely. This should allow you to connect to Update Connector and allow the latest client software to be downloaded and installed.

To completely re-install Update Connector:
1. Choose XMS Game from the "Start", "Programs", "Accessories", "Games" menu. Answer "Yes" to the prompt.
2. Insert the Aptiva Diagnostic & Utilities CD or the Applications Recovery CD.
3. Type: CD\ and press "Enter".
4. Type: XCOPY G:\IBMBUILD\UPDATER\*.* C:\ /S and press "Enter".
5. Type: XCOPY G:\IBMBUILD\AIW\*.* C:\ /S and press "Enter".
6. Type: XCOPY G:\IBMBUILD\HELPER\*.* C:\ /S and press "Enter".
7. Remove the CD, then press the Ctrl+Alt+Delete keys at the same time to reboot.
8. Press "Start" then press "Run".
9. Insert the Diagnostic CD then type: G:\sysfiles\updater\guide.reg and press "OK".
10. Press "Start" then press "Run".
11. Type: G:\sysfiles\updater\updater.reg and press "OK".
12. Press "Start" then press "Run".
13. Type: G:\sysfiles\updater\ibmrun.bat and press "OK".
14. Press "Start" then press "Run".
15. Type: G:\sysfiles\updater\ibmrun and press "OK".
16. Type: c:\windows\system\regsvr32.exe /s c:\updater\comctl32.ocx and press "Enter".

Some Aptiva systems may allow you to use the Aptiva Installer to re-install Update Connector.
