Aptiva - Problems with multimedia on systems with Sound Blaster
Applicable to: United States
Service Information:
If you are having problems with the sound on your Aptiva it is often useful to run a program called DIAGNOSE. This is a DOS program found in the SB16 directory and should be run from a DOS prompt outside of Windows. Choose a DOS prompt from the Aptiva Menu, then at the prompt type CD SB16 <RETURN> and then type DIAGNOSE <RETURN>.
The program will ask you for the settings for the sound card (I/O address, MIDI address, IRQ, LO DMA and HI DMA). If you are unsure of what these are or want them to be, choose the AUTOSCAN option for each setting and the program will determine these for you. If you have installed other pieces of hardware on your system and think there maybe a clash of settings, then use the program MSD (Microsoft Diagnostics located in the DOS directory) to test or check your system settings. The next section of DIAGNOSE is for testing. After testing and if everything appears in order, you should then update your system files by pressing F10. On rebooting your computer the sound card should be behaving correctly.
If the sound in certain applications appears to be quiet even when the application volume and speaker volume is turned up high the following maybe of use. There is a line in a file called AUTOEXEC.BAT, this file is referenced when the computer is started, which can be changed to increase the volume. This line is the one containing SB16SET. There are several parameters that can bet put after this (see the Sound Blaster 16 Audio Card - Multimedia User's Guide section 7-1 for a full list).
1. /MA:vol;bal Sets the master volume (0-255) and balance (-5,+5)
2. /VO:vol;bal Sets the voice volume (0-255) and balance (-5,+5)
3. /MI:vol;bal Sets the MIDI volume (0-255) and balance (-5,+5)
4. /CD:vol;bal Sets the CD volume (0-255) and balance (-5,+5)
5. /TR:vol;bal Sets the treble level (0-255) and balance (-5,+5)
6. /BA:vol;bal Sets the bass level (0-255) and balance (-5,+5)
For example edit the AUTOEXEC.BAT by typing E C:\AUTOEXEC.BATand put the following at the end of the line containing SB16SET/MA:255 /VO:255 /MI:255 /CD:255. This should sort out the volume a treat.
If you want to change the drive letter of your CD-ROM simply edit the AUTOEXEC.BAT as mentioned above, locate the line withMSCDEX.EXE in and add or change the parameter /L:* (where * is the drive letter you want). Be careful to note what the LASTDRIVE line equals in the CONFIG.SYS as this specifies the lastdrive letter that can be used (you can view the CONFIG.SYS by typing E C:\CONFIG.SYS from a DOS prompt). For example, if you want your CD-ROM to be drive J, make sure the LAST DRIVE is at least J.
