Netfinity 5000 - Peer to Peer adapter card performance

Applicable to: World-Wide

Source: RETAIN tip H165124

SYMPTOM:
If a card which uses Peer-to-Peer PCI Bus Mastering is used in a Netfinity 5000 server system, performance might be much lower than expected.

PROBLEM ISOLATION AIDS:
- The system is a Netfinity 5000 server, Type 8659, any model.

- The system is configured with a compatible PCI adapter that uses Peer-to-Peer PCI Bus Mastering.

NOTE: To confirm compatibility see the following Web site: http://www.pc.ibm.com/us/compat/

FIX:
It is strongly recommended that both the master and the card it is accessing are installed in the same PCI bus. Practically this means that they should be in slots 1-4 as slot 5 is on a different bus. If this advice is not followed, performance will be very seriously affected, and some data corruption may theoretically occur (though none has been observed in any adapters that have been tested).
