TP 760E/ED/EL/ELD - PCMCIA driver not working with Windows 95

Applicable to: World-Wide

Subject :
Incorrect drivers causing PCMCIA failure

We have seen several instances of PCMCIA devices not working on the 760E family (760E/ED/EL/ELD) of systems with Windows 95 due to the incorrect PCMCIA drivers being used. When the BIOS is changed on the system, Windows 95 changes the drivers back to the default Windows 95 PCMCIA driver instead of the preloaded IBM drivers. The typical situation is "I updated the BIOS on my system and now my PCMCIA card will not work. This is resolved by changing the drivers back to the IBM drivers for Windows 95.

To check which drivers are in use:

  1. Open Device Manager and expand the PCMCIA Socket
  2. The device should read...."PCIC or compatible PCMCIA controller on IBM system". This indicates the IBM drivers are in use. If this is not the case, follow these steps to change the drivers in use to the IBM drivers.
  3. With Device Manager open and the PCMCIA Socket expanded, open the properties of the PCMCIA controller.
  4. Select the Driver tab.
  5. Click on Change Driver.
  6. Select "PCIC or compatible PCMCIA controller on IBM system" from the list displayed and click OK and then OK again on the following screen.
  7. At the prompt, shutdown and restart the system. The IBM drivers are now being used.
