TP 760X/XD - 3Com PCMCIA fails to share files or browse using Windows 95
Applicable to: United States
SYMPTOM:
3Com Ethernet 3c389-C or D (very possibly others) fails to share files or be seen by other machines in its workgroup. The machine can see and access all the other resources on the network.
CONFIGURATION:
Any ThinkPad 760X/XD system with OSR2 preloaded using the PCMCIA cards mentioned above.
SOLUTION:
Appears to be an interaction between the card driver, OSR2, and the PC Card controller in the 760X. This works fine with an IBM Ethernet, or with the 3Com on a 560E with OSR2. This is resolved by going into Device Manager and setting the resources for the card manually. Uncheck the "use automatic settings" box and then change the I/O address one notch up. (you can then save this and then change it back to the I/O address if desired, but it must be changed for the manual settings to take effect)
This ties the card to known resources, and the problem disappears.
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:
Interestingly, in the failing state, if the card is inserted after the machine boots, it works just fine, for it appears to be a problem at driver initialization time.
