TP 380,385,560X,770 - CardWizard for Windows NT 4.0 service pack patch

Applicable to: World-Wide

Symptom:
Installing the Microsoft Windows NT Service Pack 2 (SP2) or Service Pack 3 (SP3) can cause a failure of the system to boot when installed on a ThinkPad system which is running the SystemSoft CardWizard for Windows NT 4.0 PCMCIA support software.

This problem can be prevented when proper measures are taken before and during the installation of the Service Packs.

After loading SP2 or SP3 and rebooting, the system will hang at a blue screen. This is due to SP2 or SP3 reinstalling the Microsoft supplied PCMCIA.SYS driver over the custom PCMCIA.SYS driver provided with CardWizard.

Configuration:
Any ThinkPad running Windows NT 4.0 using CardWizard for PCMCIA support.

Solution:
SystemSoft has worked with Microsoft to provide a solution for this problem for SP3. Instructions are below. Unfortunately, this mechanism is not available for SP2 upgrades. It is highly recommended to install SP3 or above as this includes all fixes that were included in SP2. If you need to install SP2, see the instructions in the additional information section of this article.

Installing SP3:
If you have CardWizard for Windows NT Version 3.10.03 or higher, it is not necessary to download the patch from the SystemSoft Web Site, you can install the Service Pack taking care to answer NO to the question of whether you wish to replace your PCMCIA.SYS file. NOTE: CardWizard Version 3.10.03 is currently supported for ThinkPad 380XD, 385XD, 560X, and 770 systems ONLY. (NOT ThinkPad 380/D/E/ED)

If you have a previous version of the CardWizard Software:
Create a temporary directory for the patch.
Download the CardWizard for Windows NT Service Pack Patch into the temporary directory. Go to SystemSoft's Web Site to download the patch
http://www.systemsoft.com/support/pccard/patch/index.htm

After you have unzipped the files, read the information in the README file.
Install CardWizard for Windows NT Service Pack Patch on your system. (This will tell Windows NT to prompt for input before replacing the PCMCIA.SYS file.)

Install the Service Pack 3 taking care to answer NO to the question about replacing your PCMCIA.SYS file.

Additional information:
Installing SP2:
Since SP3 contains all modifications made in SP2, we recommend that you upgrade to SP3. (SP2 is not a prerequisite for the SP3 installation). If you need to install SP2, follow the steps listed below:

Uninstall CardWizard for Windows NT. (This procedure is described in the CardWizard User Guide and README.)
- Reboot your system.
- Install Service Pack 2.
- Reinstall CardWizard.

What if I install SP2 or SP3 without the above modifications?
If you install SP2 or SP3 prior to making the above modifications, the system will hang when you reboot. To recover, follow the instructions below:

If Windows 95 is also installed on your system, reboot your system into Windows 95. If Windows 95 is not installed on your system, boot into DOS or Windows 95 using a DOS or Windows 95 boot diskette. (Insert the boot diskette into the floppy drive and then boot the system.)

The CardWizard drivers will need to be removed from the system. The recommendation is to rename these drivers instead of deleting them. One of the easiest ways to do this is to change the extension for each driver from .sys to .ysy (or .exe to .xex.)

The default location for the CardWizard drivers is \winnt\system32\drivers. The drivers to remove are "PCCard.sys", "resman.sys", "drvmgr.exe", and "SS*.sys". [where SS* could be any or all of SSIntel.sys, SSTI1130.sys, SSTI1131.sys, SSCL67XX.sys, SSCL6832.sys, SSTcic.sys, SSVadem.sys, SSCrdBus.sys, and SSI365.sys].

CardWizard replaces PCMCIA.SYS when it is installed. In order to successfully uninstall CardWizard (in Step 5), you may need to update the PCMCIA.SYS file which is stored in the CardWizard directory. PCMCIA.SYS resides in the Windows NT drivers directory (usually \winnt\system32\drivers). If the size of this file is less than 3000 bytes, then this file was not updated by the Windows NT installation and therefore, no action is required. If the size of this file is larger than 3000 bytes, then you should copy this file to the CardWizard directory (usually \program files\systemsoft\cardwizard). Reboot into Windows NT. The system will boot successfully. Run setup to complete the CardWizard for Windows NT uninstall. Be sure to run the setup which goes with the version of CardWizard you installed! Reinstall CardWizard.
