Color Flatbed Scanner - Various problems and solutions

Applicable to: World-Wide

Problem:
Getting error message, " I/O error cannot access scanner to Parallel port conflict", when using Pagis or Adobe with Color Flatbed Scanner. Note: One indication of this error is that the Pagis Scanbar will not automatically launch during startup.
Solution:
1. Remove all twain drivers from the system.
2. Uninstall Flatbed drivers.
3. Reinstall Flatbed drivers.

Problem:
After installing the Flatbed Scanner, the computer boots up and tries to access the A:\ drive abnormally.
Solution:
Clear the Windows 95 documents folder.

Problem:
After installing Adobe Photo Deluxe CD on the Aptiva M62 the computer boots up with error message, "Error loading Windows". After that the only way to access Windows 95 is in safe mode.
Solution:
1. In safe mode, uninstall the Adobe software and reboot.
2. Select F8 - Command Prompt Only
3. Change directory to \WINDOWS
4. Rename system.ini to system.001
5. Copy system.bak to system.ini
6. Reboot - system should start fine now.
7. Re-install Adobe Photo Deluxe CD being sure to select custom install. (There are four boxes, select Adobe Photo Deluxe only).

Problem:
Getting "Insufficient disk space" error when trying to scan using the Adobe Photodeluxe software.
Solution:
1. Close Adobe Photodeluxe.
2. Edit the file C:\Program Files\PhotoDeluxe 2.0\Prefs\Pd.INI
3. Change the value of "FreeSpace=" to the amount of free space of the hard drive. Note: The free space has to be in bytes.
4. Save the changes and start Photo Deluxe. It should scan without any error messages.

Problem:
The icons in the sendto bar are being displayed as yellow folders only. They can be used fine, but the icons are not correct. Also, re-installing Pagis SE does not fix the problem.
Explanation:
The Pagis sendto bar keeps the icons correctly, only if the little arrow is on all shortcuts. If something removes those little arrows in the bottom left corner, the Pagis sendto bar will turn all icons to yellow folders.
Solution:
If this problem is being experienced on an Aptiva, make sure the shortcut overlays were not turned off by using the desktop customization.
If this problem is being experienced on a clone, make sure TweakUI is not used and make sure the shortcut overlays are not disabled.

Problem:
When the business card setting in Pagis scantool is being used intermitant "Internal Errors" occur.
Solution:
There are two ways around this problem:
1. Drop the resolution from 400 to 300.
2. Make sure the image is being put in the area defined 3.5" x 3.5".

Problem:
Trying to scan a color image and it initially scans in color and towards the end of the scan goes black and white when Pagis is doing the enhancements. Note: This seems to occur when a newspaper photograph or colour photocopy is being scanned.
Solution:
Change from "Any Document" to "Photograph".

Problem:
When using legal size paper with the scan and print option, Pagis will not print legal size (even if it is set to print in legal size) if the printer is set to print at any other setting.
Solution:
The workaround is to set printer manually for legal size. This does work. I have contacted Pagis in this matter and spoke to one of their techs. The following E-Mail they sent me is attached.

Question:
How do I set the path to the Pagis inbox?
Answer:
To quickly put the "save in" destination back to the default "pagis inbox"
1. Make sure the pagis scantool is not running.
2. Click on Start
3. Click on Find
4. Click on Files or Folders
5. In the named field type "scantool.ini"
6. Right click and select Rename
7. Rename the file to something such as scantool1

There is no need to restart the system. Execute the scantool and the "save in" field will now display "pagis inbox"

Problem:
Unable to install the setup software for the scanner.
Solution:
Check to see if the computer is using the new feature from IE 4.0, the one that changes the desktop in Windows 95. If so, try to remove or disable it and then try the installation again.

Problem:
After installing the Photodeluxe software (using the Typical installation option) and rebooting, a quick error message appears on the screen before Windows loads completely and the computer powers off. There is no way to enter Windows in Normal mode, however, the computer is able to boot in safe mode. Also uninstalling Photodeluxe from within safe mode does not help.
Explanation:
Because the Typical installation option is used, Adobe Type Manager is also installed which apparently causes a conflict.
Solution:
Go into the Control panel and click use Add/Remove Programs to un-install Adobe Type manager. If it does not appear as a removable option, edit the system.ini file and change the first line under the [boot] section from SYSTEM.DRV=ATMSYSTEM.DRV to SYSTEM.DRV=SYSTEM.DRV
Also, delete or REM the line that reads "ATM.SYSTEM.DRV=SYSTEM.DRV". After these changes are made Windows will boot normally and Photodeluxe can be installed using the Custom option so that the Adobe Type Manager can be de-selected from the install list.
