Aptiva - 2144/2168 (SL-C/D/F/G) Installing Windows 95

Applicable to: United States

IMPORTANT: The information below only applies to Aptiva Models 2144/2168-2xP, 6xP, P30, S15.

BE SURE TO BUY THE CD-ROM VERSION OF WINDOWS 95. READ SECTION 3 IF YOUR MODEL HAS WARP PRELOADED!!!!

Installing Microsoft** Windows** 95 on Your Aptiva Computer

Now that Microsoft Windows 95 has been released, we are making available a diskette image that you can use to prepare your IBM Aptiva personal computer to accept the Windows 95 upgrade. If your computer has OS/2 Warp, be sure to read step 3 carefully!!!!!!!!!

You will need at least 10 MB of free space on the hard disk and 4 MB of memory to install Windows 95. We recommend at least 8 MB of memory to enhance Windows 95 performance. If your computer has less than 8 MB, check with your retailer to purchase additional memory. (To determine how much memory is in your computer, click on the Custom Tools icon. Then click on System Information.)

Follow these five steps to upgrade your computer to use Windows 95:

1. Back up system files and any files or software that you have added to your system.

a. Double-click on Custom Tools, then click on Backup and Restore.

b. Click on Backup Your Software, then follow the instructions on the screen.

Important: On some systems, if you are using OS/2 Warp, you may need to reboot to DOS/Windows. You should use the backup program in the DOS Tools group in Windows to backup your files.

2. Review the list of key changes. Your Aptiva personal computer will behave differently once Windows 95 is installed.

List of key changes:

- Windows 3.1 program groups are called "folders" in Windows 95. The folders will not be open on the desktop when you start Windows 95.

- To start programs in Windows 95, click on the Start button in the bottom left corner of the desktop.

- The Windows 3.1 Personal Desktop program on some models will not work in Windows 95. To set up different configurations for different users, use the Passwords program in the Windows 95 Control Panel.

- Windows 95 comes with an AutoPlay feature that allows you to insert a CD in the CD-ROM drive and have it play automatically. Your
system can automatically enter low power states, such as Standby or Auto Power Off. If you enable AutoPlay, your system can no longer
enter low power states.

- For models that have the IBM Information Superhighway program, the Internet Connection will not work in Windows 95. To access the Internet, use the on-line services.

- For models that have the FaxWorks Voice program, some of the Call Center features will not work in Windows 95. You can obtain a free
FaxWorks Voice update from the IBM PC Company Bulletin Board.

- If your computer has the Display Select program in Custom Tools, it will not work in Windows 95. To set up your display, start the Windows 95 Control Panel and double-click on Display.

- Backup programs for Windows 3.1, like the Backup/Restore program in Custom Tools, will not back up files correctly in Windows 95. To backup files, use the Windows 95 backup program.

- On some models, the Virus Checking program in Custom Tools will not work in Windows 95. We recommend that you purchase a virus checking program for Windows 95.

- Other programs that you may have added, like screen savers or games, may not work in Windows 95. If you need additional help with these programs, please contact the company that produced the program.

3. Learn about the changes for OS/2 Warp

Some Aptiva models come with the OS/2 Warp operating system.

OS/2 Warp and Windows 95 are not compatible operating systems. If your computer has OS/2 Warp, the Windows 95 install program will remove OS/2 system files and directories.

Important: If you have any personal files in the OS/2 directories, you should create a directory and move the files to the new directory before you install Windows 95.

Before you install Windows 95, your computer must be set to boot Windows. If your computer is currently set to boot OS/2, you must change the boot setting before you install Windows 95. To change the boot setting, double-click on the Reboot to DOS/Windows icon, then click on Continue from the Start DOS window.

4. Use the IBM Aptiva Windows 95 Install diskette to install Windows 95. To create the disk, download w95apt.exe and run it. This file will create the Aptiva-Window's 95 installation diskette. The installation process will take approximately one hour. The install program requires you to answer several questions. Be sure you have enough time to complete the process.

To run the Windows 95 installation program:

a. Insert the IBM Aptiva Windows 95 Install diskette into drive A:

b. Turn on the computer. (If Rapid Resume is enabled, the computer will start the operating system. Press Ctrl + Alt + Delete at the same time to start the computer from the diskette.)

c. Select 1 = Install Windows 95 from the menu.

d. Follow the instructions on your screen to continue installing Windows 95.

5. Start using Windows 95. To learn how to start programs and work with windows, take the Windows 95 Tour that is displayed on your Windows 95 screen. If you need help while you are using Windows 95, click on the Start button in the bottom left corner of the desktop, then click on Help.

You can use the IBM Aptiva Windows 95 Install diskette to remove Windows 95 or recover your original Aptiva software.
