Aptiva - How to fix "locked drive error" with the system booting into Safe Mode

Applicable to: United States

NOTE: This is for machines which the owner has decided to compress the hard drive and that compressed hard drive's name is H: (otherwise, change accordingly.)

Symptom:
An Aptiva has the following symptoms, drivespace on the hard drive, an error about a locked drive, and machine will only boot in safe mode, try the following fix:

Solution:
Boot the machine up in safe mode (F8 when you see "Starting Windows 95" at the top of the screen). Open an MS-DOS session and edit the AUTOEXEC.BAT.

Change the line: ECHO Y LOCK C: > NUL
to: ECHO Y LOCK H: > NUL

Change the line: UNLOCK C: > NUL
to: UNLOCK H: > NUL

Save this as AUTOEXEC.BAT and re-boot the system. It should boot up cleanly and the Rapid Resume and Scheduler will work as before.
