Service Information:
PS/1(03/94) Hardware Quirks
Attached are the known hardware 'quirks' which have been shipped with the PS/1(03/94) program. This information is intended to assist with potential customer support situations. Please recognize the sensitivity of this information - only forward to authorized personnel with a need to know.
Caution; although some of this information may be helpful when attempting to diagnose problems, we should be careful about distributing some of these quirks to the public.

Do not distribute this file outside IBM!

The chart below contains the software quirks on the PS/1(03/94) systems which I think will affect our customers the most. The data was gathered from the MS (PS/1(03/94) Software) and MW (PS/1(03/94) World Trade) PTS logs, Usability test results, and NSTL test results. The problem areas are listed in order of severity.

Rapid Resume
Some activity, such as diskette use, printing and communications, will not be detected by Automatic Power Off. The computer may suspend during this type of activity.
Rapid Resume will not function with some programs. For example, DOS games that don't run under Windows or use memory managers have problems with Rapid Resume.
The names "Rapid Resume" and "Smart Energy System" are not translated; they are confusing in many World Trade countries.
The instructions on the Rapid Resume screen are too general; some users do not set up Rapid Resume correctly.

Compatibility
Video problems will occur with some application programs. Most problems are minor distractions, but if a user runs Encarta in 1024x768 (256 colors) mode, the system may crash.
Users may not have enough DOS memory for drivers they add because several drivers are preloaded in memory (especially on multimedia models) and shadow BIOS uses memory that EMM386 could use.

Display Setup
Confusing and difficult to set up Display Type, especially if display is not an IBM. If the user selects an incorrect display type, video problems may occur or the display may be unreadable.

Configuration Utility
Usability is not consistent with other software we ship. Does not include all desired information or mouse support.

Customer Diagnostics
The messages are in English; will be unreadable by customers in some countries.

Software Preview
The interface and usability are not consistent with the other PS/1 software. Several buttons and messages are confusing.

Please see the hardware quirks for the PS/1(03/94) program listed below. I have attempted to order the items according to decreasing severity.

Some Disney Games Do Not Resume Correctly
If you turn the power off during some of the Disney games, the Sound Blaster card may not get reinitialize correctly during a resume. The result is that the music will still play, but digital audio will sound sluggish.

Sound Card POST Errors
If a Sound Blaster compatible card is installed in the machine, a Ctrl-Alt-Delete may cause POST errors. Development Engineering has written a program that can be put in the AUTOEXEC.BAT file to prevent this from happening. The program is called SOUNDCLR.COM and is available from the support group.

Interference With Tall SIMMs On 2168
In a 2168, if a tall SIMM is installed in the second SIMM socket, it may interfere with the riser card bracket in the chassis.

Diamond Stealth S3805 Video Card
This adapter card does not get reinitialized correctly upon a resume. The screen does not look correct and the system will not respond to mouse clicks or keyboard commands.

Video Problems With Feature Connector
There will be a total of 5200 PS/1(03/94) machines in the field that may exhibit video problems when a device is connected to the video feature connector. The customer may see some horizontal lines on the screen, with the severity becoming worse as the video resolution is increased. All other machines will have the necessary fixes on the planar to eliminate the problem. Development is designing and releasing a cable/adapter that can be attached to one of the problem machines to
cure the symptoms.

Problems with E3 Monitors On Rapid Resume
Occasionally, some 14RMS monitors (EMEA IBM .28 SVGA) will display some "video trash" for an instant after resuming.
Also, when operated at low voltage (110V), the monitor seems to have a sync problem after a resume. The problem is not evident when the monitor is set to high voltage (220V). This monitor is only being used in EMEA and will probably only be operated at high voltage.

Interference With Processor Heat Sink/Fan Combination
A heat sink and fan (such as what may be installed on a Pentium upgrade processor) will interfere with adapter cards installed in the lowest slot on desktop machines (2133, 2155). This only applies to cards that are 3/4 length or greater.

S-part Power Up
There will be a total of 200 machines in the field that could potentially exhibit startup/boot problems when an SL-Enhanced processor is installed. All other machines have a change made to the planar to correct the startup timings. The change was initiated after an Intel spec change, even though Development Engineering has seen no evidence of the problem.

Xircom Token Ring
A recent version of the Xircom Token Ring adapter and its associated driver cause a Stack Fault error in Windows. The newer version (Model PT2 - 16B3, driver SMARTIPX v. 2.12) works correctly.

OS/2 Virtual Machine Lockup With S-part Processors
While testing OS/2, we found that SL-Enhanced processors would create a lockup when trying to start a DOS virtual machine. This problem has been identified as an operating system problem by the OS/2 group and a patch is already available.
