TP 380XD - System is seeing only 2GB on a 3GB hard drive

SYMPTOM:
Thinkpad should have a 3GB HDD, but can only use 2GB. There is only one partition (C:) of 2GB. No other local drives are seen.

CONFIGURATION:
ThinkPad 380XD, model 2635-8A0. Some of these machines shipped with wrong partitions, leaving around 1GB unusable. The affected models will have serial numbers starting with 55-1... or 55-2... Serial number starting with 55-3 and above are not affected.

RESOLUTION:
Please follow the instructions below. This procedure consists of 2 steps: a) preparing the drive and b) formatting the drive.

A.) PREPARING THE DRIVE:

1. Power the machine on and boot to Windows 95.

2. Click on Start -> Programs -> MS-DOS prompt.

This will bring up an MS-DOS Prompt Window showing a C:\WINDOWS> prompt.

3. Type FDISK and press the ENTER key.

4. Press ENTER to accept the default NO answer to the question
Do you wish to enable large disk support (Y/N) .....? [N]

This will bring you into the 'FDISK Options' Menu.

5. Select [1] Create partition and press ENTER.

6. Select [2] Create Extended DOS Partition and press ENTER.

Wait until the Drive integrity check is complete.

7. Select the default Extended DOS Partition by pressing ENTER. This will be approx. [1051];

8. Message Extended DOS Partition created should now appear at the bottom of the screen. Now press the ESC key.

Wait until the drive integrity check is complete.

9. You will see a message reading No logical drives defined . Accept the default drive size by pressing the ENTER key. This will be approx. [1051].

10. You will be notified that All available space in the Extended DOS Partition is assigned to logical drive. Now press the ESC key to continue.

This will now return you to the 'FDISK Options' Menu. Press ESC key to exit, and you will be back at the C:\WINDOWS> prompt

11. At the C:\WINDOWS> prompt type EXIT and press the ENTER key to close the DOS window.

12. You MUST restart your system for your changes to take effect. Any drives you have created or changed must be formatted AFTER you restart. To do this:

Click on the Start button, select Shutdown, then Shutdown the computer. Proceed with part B).

B.) FORMATTING THE D: DRIVE

1. Power the machine on and boot to Windows 95.

2. Click on Start -> Programs -> MS-DOS prompt.

This will bring up an MS-DOS Prompt Window showing a C:\WINDOWS> prompt.

3. Type FORMAT D: (please ensure that you have typed FORMAT D: and not FORMAT C) and press the Enter key.

You will receive the following warning message:

WARNING , ALL DATA ON NON-REMOVABLE DISK DRIVE D: WILL BE LOST !
Proceed with Format <Y/N>?

Please verify that it says DRIVE D and press Y and ENTER.

4. The machine will now proceed with the format of your D: drive.

Formatting 1,051.28M
xx percent completed

This operation may take a couple of minutes. It should also be noted that the drive size may vary slightly from machine to machine.

5. On completion of the format you will be asked for the Drive Volume label. If you wish to label the drive, you can do so now. If not, press ENTER.

This will now return you to the C:\WINDOWS> prompt with the D: drive information shown on the screen.

6. At the C:\WINDOWS> prompt type EXIT and press the ENTER key.

7. The D: drive is now ready to use.
