Servers - Correct concurrent drive spin-up on power-up settings

Applicable to: Canada, United States

When more than 6 drives are configured for concurrent spin-up on power-up, the RAID drives may appear DDD then / or the System may shut down after the System has first powered up.

The maximum number of ServeRAID or ServeRAID II attached hard drives supported for spin-up on power-up is 6. The default setting on these Adapters / Controllers is 6 but results in a maximum of 2 drives per SCSI channel spinning up at power up of the System.

The following procedure will identify the number of drives configured for spin-up on power-up by the Adapter/Controller:

1. Boot to the "IBM ServeRAID and ServeRAID II Configuration Diskette".

2. Choose Option 7 "Advanced Features".

3. Choose Option 8 "Display/Change Adapter Parameters".

4. Choose Option 3 "Change Adapter Host/SCSI ID".

5. look at "Concurrent Drives(0-15)" This should be set to 6 or less. The default is 6.

Details
Configuring a ServeRAID or ServeRAID II Adapter / Controller to spin-up more than 6 drives on power-up of the System can result in some drives not completing spin-up (resulting in those drives in a DDD state) and / or the System power supply to shut off (resulting in the System powering off). This is caused by the combined power requirement of the System AND spin-up on power-up of MORE than 6 hard drives, which exceeds the power available from the System power supply.
