Aptiva - FAX classes supported by AT&T (Lucent) WinModem

Symptom:
The Aptiva 2161 and 2162 systems with AT&T (Lucent) WinModem fails to receive or send faxes to some, generally older, fax machines. When sending a FAX, the Aptiva's dial, the user can hear the tones that are associated with negotiation, then it fails to send. When receiving a FAX, the user hears the telephone ring. The system then picks up and the user hears the negotiation.
Solution:
There is no solution for this situation. The Aptiva only supports Class 1 FAX protocol. The FAX machines that are involved use the Class 3 FAX protocol.
