Aptiva - Getting help in MS-DOS 6.22

Applicable to: United States

MS-DOS 6.22 combines the "command line help" abilities of DOS 5.0 with an additional "online reference manual". DOS 5.0 incorporated the "command line help" facility for the first time. "Command line help" means that you could type the command, and add a /? after it in order to get a single page help screen which would describe the command's options and "flags". "Flags" or "switches" are added to the end of a command to modify how the command reacts, or how it runs.

For instance, "DIR" will simply list the files with their information one per line. However, if you add the "/W" switch after the "DIR" command, and type the command "DIR /W", this will list the file names in the "wide" format, with five across! Using this same example, if you type "DIR /?" you will get the "command line help" which tells you the valid switches the command accepts.

For examples and a discussion of the command, you would have to refer to the reference manual, which requires the book. MS-DOS 6.22 allows you to access this reference text directly from the command prompt! If you were confused about the DIR command, and the DIR /? didn't give you the information you needed, you could simply type "HELP DIR", and you will be taken into the reference manual, turned to the DIR command page. Options in the editor allow you to search through the command reference for a word, or phrase, and print the information!

NOTE
This is not a copy of the manual that comes with MS-DOS 6.22. The online reference is the Command Reference, and the book which comes with MS-DOS 6.22 is the User's Guide.
