IBM 3153 ASCII Terminal Display - Locks up, hangs, stops communicating

Applicable to: World-Wide

Symptom:
The 3153 suddenly locks, hangs or stops communicating.

Background Information:
This is related to communication between the 3153 and the host. The host could request the 3153 to stop sending or the 3153 could request the host to stop sending.

Recommended Solution:
- The user may have accidentally pressed the Hold/Pause key. This causes the 3153 to 'freeze' the screen. When the 3153 receive data buffer fills up, the 3153 sends an DC3 (Device Control 3 Control Character) to the host. DC3 is an XOFF Transmission Off) control character. The host stops sending data to the 3153. Have the user try to resume by pressing the Hold/Pause key.
- The user may have accidentally pressed the Ctrl-S key. This causes the 3153 to send the host a DC3 (Device Control 3 Control Character) to the host. DC3 is an XOFF (Transmission Off) control character. The host stops sending data to the 3153. Have the user try to resume by pressing the Ctrl-Q key. This causes the 3153 to send the host a DC1 (Device Control 1 Control Character). DC1 is an XON (Transmission On).
