33.6K PCMCIA Data/Fax Modem w/XJACK - Explanation of features

Applicable to: World-Wide

Smart Battery Saver:
The Smart Battery Saver is a feature that puts the modem in a low power state called sleep mode. If the modem has been inactive for a certain amount of time, the modem will put itself to sleep. This inactivity time is controlled by the S24 register. If a value of 2 is put in the S24 register, the modem will go to sleep after 2 seconds of inactivity. A value of 3 correlates to 3 seconds, and so on. A value of zero in the S24 register causes the modem to never enter the sleep mode. Battery power will be conserved with the modem in sleep mode.

Digital Line Guard:
Digital Line Guard is a feature that protects the modem from digital phone lines, (i.e. digital PBXs). These digital phone lines supply too much current that will destroy normal modems. If the XJ4336 modem is plugged into a digital phone line and a call is attempted, a message will be displayed in the communications package explaining that the phone line cannot be used. The modem automatically goes back on-hook. The modem will function normally when it is then plugged into a POTS line. The modem will not be damaged by being plugged into a digital phone line.

The capabilities are limited to answer machine functionality, data, and fax. The answer machine function allows incoming calls to play a greeting which is user changable. The modem can be used as a dialer and when the other party answers the user can pick up the handset and talk.

This modem does not support a speakerphone type connection and does it offer duplexing; therefore, there is no available microphone capability when placing an out-bound call on the system.
