Aptiva - How to set the Dialing Properties in Windows 95
Applicable to: World-Wide
Click on "Start", go to "Settings" and click on "Control Panel". In the "Control Panel" window, double-click on the "Modems" icon. A "Modem Properties" window will open, click on the "Dialing Properties" tab. A window similar to Figure 1 will open.

Make sure it is configured correctly. The first box should have "Default Location" in it. Next to "Area Code" you should enter your present area code. The next box should have "United States of America" inside it. The rest of the boxes may be different depending on local circumstances but generally, they should be set as follows: The first box, "To access an outside line, first dial...
for local" is usually left blank in for a residential telephone. The box, "...for long distance" usually DOES NOT require "1" to be entered. The ".. for long distance" is for if you need to dial an "8" or "9" to access a long distance line.
If you have call-waiting, the "Call Waiting box" is generally set for *70, though some local telephone companies may be different. The last one, "Tone Dialing" is standard but some "Pulse" telephones are still in use in rural areas. These would generally be the rotary types of telephones, as opposed to the push-button. After the settings are verified, click "OK" at the bottom of the "Dialing Properties" screen, this will bring you back to the "Modem Properties" screen, here click "OK", that will bring you back to "Control Panel", click on the "X" in the upper right hand corner to close the window.
