Aptiva-PS/1 - Installing IBM PC-DOS 7.0

The IBM PC-DOS 7.0 package consists of a User Guide, a set of installation diskettes, and various pamphlets. If you have a CD-ROM drive on the system, you can obtain the upgrade for PC-DOS 7.0 on a CD-ROM disk.

The installation of the operating system files and the CPBACKUP (Central Point Backup) program requires 6 megabytes of free space. A full installation with all optional tools will require approximately 18 megabytes. A typical installation on a desktop computer, however, will only need 10-12 megabytes, since some of the optional tools are for laptop systems.

To install PC-DOS 7.0:

1. Boot up the system from the hard drive with your current DOS system. If you are in Windows, exit completely from Windows and select the DOS prompt from the menu.

2. Insert Disk 1 of the installation diskettes into the A: drive and enter the command:

A:\SETUP

at the DOS prompt. If you are using a CD-ROM for the installation, enter the SETUP command as:

D:\SETUP

where D: is the drive letter of your CD-ROM drive. For example, if your CD-ROM drive is E:, you would enter E:\SETUP

3. During the initial phase of the installation, the SETUP program will prompt you for information about which options and tools you wish to install and where to install the DOS files.

4. When all selections have been completed, the installation will begin. The SETUP program will begin creating files in the specified DOS directory (C:\DOS) and prompt you when the next disk is needed.

5. After all files have been installed, PC-DOS will then offer to make changes to your CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT files. Normally, you can just continue with the setup to let the system make the changes. The files can always be edited at a later time to correct any problems that may arise.

6. Once completed, the system can then be rebooted with the new operating system installed and in effect at bootup.

Note: A special compression program was used for disks 2-5 of the installation disks. If you place one of these diskettes in the A: drive and enter DIR, you'd see a small file listed there and no free space left on the diskette. This should not be a cause for concern. SETUP can find the special compressed files on the diskette and unpack them during the installation.

Note: If you do not initially install one or more of the optional tools provided with PC-DOS 7.0, you can install them at a later time, using the command: A:\SETUP /E
