IBM IntelliStation/IBM PC Options - Memory POST errors after upgrading with 32/64MB DIMMs

Applicable to: World-Wide

Symptom:
After upgrading (increasing) memory capacity with the following Options by IBM memory:

64MB ECC SDRAM 3.3V 66Mhz Au (Marketing part number 04K0074)
32MB ECC SDRAM 3.3V 66Mhz Au (Marketing part number 04K0073)

the system returns the following, or similar, Post memory error codes:

164 Memory or Extended Memory Size Mismatch
201, 20x Memory Data Error

Problem Isolation Aids:
This tip applies to IBM Commercial Desktop and IntelliStation Series systems equipped with Intel Pentium II processors and Intel LX/BX controller chipsets.

Machine types include 6561, 6588, 6591, 6862, 6888, 6889, 6892, and 6898.

A small number of DIMMs supplied as IBM Options (OBI) have been found to contain an incorrect EEPROM value on the memory DIMM. The incorrect value has been identified in, but is not limited to 32MB and 64MB DIMMs.

The error condition may be seen in DIMMs installed by themselves, or in combination with other memory DIMMs.

Fix:
After normal problem determination procedures have identified an affected DIMM, replace the DIMM with the appropriate FRU replacement part number.
