Aptiva - How to correct an MMSYSTEM266 error

To Obtain "Restore.exe":
Before restoring files from the Aptiva Product Recovery CD, it is necessary that the program file, "RESTORE.EXE" is located on your local hard drive. If this file is not found, it must first be downloaded from the IBM BBS; (919) 517-0001, or from the Aptiva file area at ftp://204.146.167.81/pub/pccbbs/aptiva/aptrstor.exe. This file is run from your hard drive and expands files to a floppy diskette. From a command prompt in the A: directory, type "GO", and press "Enter" key. The necessary files will be installed onto your hard drive. When it is determined that RESTORE.EXE is installed to the C: drive, Continue to the next step.

1. Boot the system into Windows 95.

2. Click on "Start", "Shut Down".

3. Click on the Radio button next to "Restart the Computer in MS-DOS Mode".

4. Click on "Yes".

5. When you get to the DOS Screen, make sure you are in the root directory by typing "CD\" then press "Enter".

6. Place the Product Recovery CD in the CD-ROM Drive and close the door.

7. Type "Restore MSVIDEO.DLL" and Press "Enter". (File(s) will extract)

8. Type "Restore MCIAVI.DRV" and Press "Enter". (File(s) will extract)

9. Type "Restore DCIMAN.DLL" and Press "Enter". (File(s) will extract)

Note: Do NOT type the quotation marks

10. Press and hold the CTRL and ALT keys then Press "Delete" to restart the computer.

11. Release the CTRL, ALT, and DEL.

For 2140 & 2142 systems:

1. Boot the system into Windows 95

2. Place the Product Recovery CD in the CD-ROM Drive.

3. Click on "Start", "Shut Down".

4. Click on the Radio button next to "Restart the Computer".

5. Click on "Yes".

6. The system will boot to the Recovery CD. When prompted to continue with the System recover, Press "Y" then "Enter".

7. Next you will see the "Terms and Conditions" Statement. To accept the terms, press "Y" then "Enter".

8. Press the Down Arrow twice to highlight "3. Recover Selected Files", then press "Enter".

9. Press the Down Arrow twice to highlight "3. Specify a File or Directory", then press "Enter".

10. Type "MSVIDEO.DLL" in the box provides and press "Enter".

11. On the next screen, Verify the syntax of the file to be restored. If it is correct, Press "Y" then "Enter". If it is not correct, Press "N" then "Enter" and repeat step #10.

12. You will be asked if you wish to view the file matches before restoring the selected file. Press "N" then "Enter".

13. When asked " Do you wish to restore the file" Press "Y" then "Enter".

14. When the restore has completed, Press CTRL + ALT + Delete to restart the computer.

15. The system will boot to the Recovery CD. When prompted to continue with the System recover, Press "Y" then "Enter".

16. Next you will see the "Terms and Conditions" Statement. To accept the terms, press "Y" then "Enter".

17. Press the Down Arrow twice to highlight "3. Recover Selected Files", then press "Enter".

18. Press the Down Arrow twice to highlight "3. Specify a File or Directory" then press "Enter".

19. Type "MCIAVI.DRV" in the box provides and press "Enter".

20. On the next screen, Verify the syntax of the file to be restored. If it is correct, Press "Y" then "Enter". If it is not correct, Press "N" then "Enter" and repeat step #19.

21. You will be asked if you wish to view the file matches before restoring the selected file. Press "N" then "Enter".

22. When asked " Do you wish to restore the file" Press "Y" then "Enter".

23. When the restore has completed, Press "CTRL" + "ALT" + "Delete" to restart the computer.

24. The system will boot to the Recovery CD. When prompted to continue with the System recover, Press "Y" then "Enter".

25. Next you will see the "Terms and Conditions" Statement. To accept the terms, press "Y" then "Enter".

26. Press the Down Arrow twice to highlight "3. Recover Selected Files", then press "Enter".

27. Press the Down Arrow twice to highlight "3. Specify a File or Directory" then press "Enter".

28. Type "DCIMAN.DLL" in the box provides and press "Enter".

29. On the next screen, Verify the syntax of the file to be restored. If it is correct, Press "Y" then "Enter". If it is not correct, Press "N" then "Enter" and repeat step #28.

30. You will be asked if you wish to view the file matches before restoring the selected file. Press "N" then "Enter".

31. When asked " Do you wish to restore the file" Press "Y" then "Enter".

32. Remove the Recovery CD.

33. When the restore has completed, Press "CTRL" + "ALT" + "Delete" to restart the computer.
