Aptiva - Constant clicking in sound recorder playback

Applicable to: United States

Situation:
When a user is trying to record .wav files with the sound recorder in Windows 95, a constant clicking sound occurs in the background during playback. This situation is present when using either radio or telephone sound quality option to record. The microphone has been repositioned in relationship to the speakers and monitor to remove any possible interference. Reloading the system and installing the new Mwave drivers has been tried as well as selecting different recording attributes. Regardless, the constant clicking is still present in the background. When recording using the CD Quality setting, however, it does not get the clicking sound.

This error only occurs on Aptiva 2134, 2144-Axx/Mxx, 2168-Axx/Mxx and 2176 systems with the Mwave card. The problem does not occur on Aptiva 2159-xxx systems or systems with the Crystal soundcard.

The error only occurs using the Windows 95, Sound Recorder Applet.

Testing reveals that the error occurs only in two instances. Using the multimedia settings panel from the control panel (Select "Start", "Settings", "Control Panel", "Multimedia", "Customize", "Attributes") One is able to change or customize the recording attributes to a setting other than the default (Radio Quality). Testing of all of the recording frequencies has narrowed the problem down to two failures:

22,050 Hz, 8 bit, Mono, 22 KB/s
44,100 HZ, 8 but, Mono, 43 KB/s

All other frequencies perform normally.

The failure is characterized by the following 4 clicks or transients per second, sounds much like a metronome. The click is independent of the frequency chosen. The error only occurs with the Sound Recorder Applet. The error occurs even after the 60AE7 DOS, MIDI, and Windows drivers are added. Uninstalling and reinstalling the Sound Recorder Applet does not correct the error. Installing the MS-Service Pak for Windows 95 does not correct the error. Adjusting the various gain, input, and output settings for the Mic will not work.

Answer:
Solution #1
Use the Audio Station Wave Editor Applet

1. Select "Start", "Programs", "Aptiva Entertainment", "Music Center, "Audio Station".

2. From "Audio Station" choose the go to the DAT panel and click "Edit", this will bring up the WinDAT WAV Editor.

3. Normally the Editor comes up with a default .wav file (chimes.wav) From the WinDAT Editor menu choose, FILE, NEW, the window will say New Sample.

4. From the Menu choose, "Windows", "Setup", this will bring up a dialog box with several settings make sure they read as follows:

File Format WAV Data Format 8 bit PCM
Sample Rate 22050 STEREO BUTTON (unlit)

The above settings are equivalent 22,050 Hz, 8 bit, Mono, 22 KB/s using the Win 85 sound recorder.

Click "OK" to save your changes and return to the main screen.

5. From the main screen click on the Red Record button, it will blink, then choose the Play Arrow > and begin recording. When finished recording choose the Stop Square. Recorded files are stored in the C:\WINDOWS directory. You may change the default directory from the SETUP dialog box.

Solution #2
Customize the Multimedia settings from Control Panel.

1. Choose, "Start", "Settings", "Control Panel", "Multimedia", from the Audio Tab, click the "Customize" button.

2. From the Customize dialog box change the Attribute something other than 22,050 Hz, 8 bit, Mono, 22 KB/s; 44,100 HZ, 8 bit, Mono, 43 KB/s.

For as near to Radio Quality as possible choose, 22,050 Hz, 8 bit, Stereo, 43 KB/s.

3. Click "Save As".. and give the new attribute a name e.g. "IBM Radio Quality: and click "OK". Next click "Apply" and finally "Close". This will allow you to record without the click in Sound Recorder but will increase the size of the .wav file.
