Aptiva-PS/1 - Backup utility in IBM PC-DOS 7.0

Applicable to: United States

CPBACKUP (Central Point Backup) is provided in IBM PC-DOS 7.0 for file backup and restore functions. CPBACKUP is available as a full-screen or DOS command-line utility program, as well as a fully functional Windows program.

With CPBACKUP, backup copies of data can be made to diskettes, tape, or other DOS drives. You can back up files using full, incremental, differential, or unattended methods. You can compare, compress, encrypt, and virus-check data as it is backed up.

CPBACKUP also provides facilities that allow you to tailor it for general and specific needs. For example, you can create and use set-up files for specific directories or file types, rather than backing up all files or all directories.

For a complete description of CPBACKUP facilities and how to use them, enter the command CPBACKUP from a DOS prompt and press the F1 key for help. If you are using the Windows version of CPBACKUP, select Help from the top menu bar.

The DOS BACKUP and RESTORE commands, previously available with DOS versions 4.0 and 5.0, are again available for use in IBM PC-DOS 7.0. The operation of these commands is similar to their operation in those earlier versions of PC-DOS. These commands were not included in PC-DOS 6.x.

Notes:
1. Commands used to backup data require a compatible command to restore the data. For example, if you use the CPBACKUP command to start the full-screen Central Point Backup program, you must use the Restore function available from this same full-screen Backup program. Backups made with earlier versions of CPBACKUP can be restored with the version included in PC-DOS 7.0.

2. Backups made using MSBACKUP (Microsoft Backup), provided with Microsoft's MS-DOS, are only compatible with the restore facility of the program. Backups are not interchangeable between PC-DOS and MS-DOS.

3. Backups made using the BACKUP command of PC-DOS 7.0, or earlier DOS versions, cannot be restored with CPBACKUP, nor can backups made with CPBACKUP be restored using the RESTORE command provided with this version or earlier versions of DOS. The DOS RESTORE command must be used to restore files backed up with the DOS BACKUP command.

4. When Microsoft Windows 95 is installed on a system that previously used IBM PC-DOS, the CPBACKUP functions should not be used with the new system. The CPBACKUP program that is included with IBM PC-DOS was not designed to run in Windows 95. You must obtain a backup program that is compatible with Windows 95 from a software store or other vendor. Using the CPBACKUP program that is included with PC-DOS on a system that has Windows 95 installed will, at best, result in incomplete and incorrect backups. At worst, CPBACKUP may cause the Windows 95 system to hang or otherwise fail.
