TP General - Getting "Could not open com port error" after using modem once

SYMPTOM:
After using the modem successfully once, on subsequent reboots you get the error message "Could not open com port" when trying to access the modem.

CONFIGURATION:
Any ThinkPad running Windows 95 with a modem installed.

SOLUTION:
One thing to check is the following:
1.) Click on Start, then Settings, and the Control Panel.
2.) Double-click on Accessibility Options.
3.) Select the General tab. At the bottom of this window you will see the following:

If there is a check mark in the box for Support SerialKey devices you can do one of two things:
1.) If you are not using a serial device that requires this option (modems generally do not require this feature), click on the box to remove the check mark.
2.) If you are using a serial device that requires this option, then click on the Settings... You will get the following screen:

When you enable this option it automatically sets itself up on COM2, which is where the modem usually resides. Change the setting to a COM port other than the one that you are trying to use for your modem.
