TP General - How to check the audio settings.

Applicable to: World-Wide

This document contains information on how to check/edit the audio address on your ThinkPad.

*For ThinkPad 365X/XD, 380, 560, 760 and 765:
In Windows 3.1x and OS/2:
1. Start Windows 3.1x or OS/2 Warp
2. Double click on the ThinkPad Group icon
3. Double click on the ThinkPad Features icon
4. Single click on the audio icon (picture of a speaker)
5. Click on the advanced icon
6. Change the audio I/O address as needed
7. Exit ThinkPad Features (it will save the settings automatically)
8. Close out of all programs and exit to DOS. *NOTE: For OS/2 right click and choose shutdown
9. Power off the ThinkPad
10. Boot the ThinkPad

In Windows 95:
1. Start Windows 95
2. Click on Start + Programs
3. Click on ThinkPad + Thinkpad Features
4. Single click on the audio icon (picture of a speaker)
5. Click on the advanced icon
6. Change the audio I/O address as needed
7. Exit ThinkPad Features (it will save the settings automatically)
8. Click on Start + Shutdown
9. Click on Restart the Computer + Yes

*For ThinkPad 755w/ MWave:
In Windows 3.1x and OS/2 Warp:

1. Start Windows 3.1x or OS/2 Warp
2. Double click on the ThinkPad Group icon
3. Double click on the ThinkPad Features icon * NOTE: Depending on version of ThinkPad Utilities you may have a ThinkPad Setup icon instead
4. Double click on the DSP icon
5. Change the audio I/O address as needed
6. Click Save
7. Close out of all programs and exit to DOS *NOTE: For OS/2 right click and choose shutdown
8. Power off the ThinkPad
9. Boot up the ThinkPad

In Windows 95:
1. Start Windows 95
2. Click Start + Programs
3. Click ThinkPad + Thinkpad Features * NOTE: Depending on version of ThinkPad Utilities you may have a ThinkPad Setup icon instead.
4. Double click on the DSP icon
5. Change the audio I/O address as needed
6. Click Save
7. Close out of all applications
8. Click on Start + Shutdown
9. Click on Restart the Computer + Yes

*For ThinkPad 701:
For all Operating systems:

- The I/O address is hard coded to 220. This cannot change.
- The IRQ and DMA can be changed.
1. From Easy-Setup Screen, choose "Config."
2. From the Configuration Utility Screen, page down to the "User Port Settings" field and press Enter
3. Use the down arrow key to highlight the Audio system settings field. Use the right and left arrow keys to change
the settings. Press ESC key to save changes. Select the Restart option.

701 Audio Gotcha's:
Windows 3.1x:
There is an [auddrive.drv] section in the system.ini file that stores Audio settings for Windows. These settings will override the BIOS settings.

Windows 95:
Changing the ESS688 device properties in Device Manager will override the BIOS settings.

OS/2 Warp:
In the config.sys is a line that reads: DEVICE=C:\MMOS2\ES688DD.SYS /B220 /D1 /I7 /N:ES6881$.

/B is the Port Address and cannot be altered.
/D is the DMA.
/I is the Interrupt.

These parameters will override the BIOS settings.
