Aptiva - 2137 - Trouble installing a third party sound card
Applicable to: World-Wide
Symptom:
If you install a Plug and Play ISA sound card in the 2137 model Aptiva systems and disable the Crystal audio chip on the system board, AND there is no driver support in Windows 95 for the new sound card, Windows 95 will load the drivers for the Crystal audio chip.
Solution:
This configuration is working as designed. Microsoft's Windows 95 Plug and Play's design is supposed to interface directly with the system BIOS to determine how to best handle plug and play devices found in the system configuration and assign resources to those devices. The operating system directly controls BIOS to manipulate devices in the system configuration.
The solution is to disable the Crystal sound chip by using Device Manager's resource management prior to the installation of another sound card. Use the following procedure to do so:
1. From the Start Menu, choose Settings.
2. Choose Control Panel.
3. Open System.
4. Click on the Device Manager tab.
5. Click on the "+" next to Sound, Video, and Game Adapters.
6. Select one the Crystal entries by clicking on it.
7. Click on Properties.
8. Under "Device Usage", click next to "Disable in this hardware profile"
9. Click on OK or Apply.
10. Repeat steps 6 through 9 for each of the Crystal entries.
11. Restart the computer.
If you have more than one hardware configuration, disable the Crystal sound adapters in all configurations.
