Aptiva-PS/1 - Installing MS-DOS on a PC-DOS system

Applicable to: United States

PC-DOS provides almost all of the commands and functions that the MS-DOS system provides, with the exception of a few commands. PC-DOS also provides several additional commands that MS-DOS does not provide. The operation of PC-DOS is also very similar, if not exactly identical, to the MS-DOS system.

There are very few occasions where it is necessary to replace the PC-DOS system with MS-DOS. This may occur because you are learning MS-DOS or using MS-DOS on another system, perhaps the system that you use at work, and you would like to be able to use the same commands and functions in both places. You also may have some specialized business software that requires MS-DOS because of the way the application was developed and dependencies on internal undocumented interfaces in MS-DOS.

MS-DOS can be installed on a PC-DOS system, but you may encounter some problems or inconsistencies after booting up with MS-DOS and running it. The items below will provide you with information on dealing with the more common problems you may have.

1. System does not start up correctly after the installation of MS-DOS. You may get messages such as "incorrect DOS version" or "bad command" during bootup. These messages must be tracked down, one at a time, to be corrected. One way to determine which commands are getting these messages is to press the F8 key as soon as you see the message "Starting MS-DOS..." on the screen at bootup. You can then step through each command to see which command produces the error message and correct the problem as necessary.

2. IBMBIO.COM and IBMDOS.SYS may still be present as hidden files in the root directory of the C: drive. You can delete these files with the following commands, entered at the DOS prompt:

CD \ <Enter>

ATTRIB C:\IBMBIO.COM -S -H -R <Enter>

ATTRIB C:\IBMDOS.COM -S -H -R <Enter>

ERASE C:\IBMBIO.COM <Enter>

ERASE C:\IBMDOS.COM <Enter>

Then reboot the system to verify that the system is working correctly.

3. Certain Aptiva icons may not work as expected. If you use the icons or buttons in Custom Tools (AptivaWare), the PC-DOS versions of these programs will continue to be used. CPBACKUP and the IBM AntiVirus software should not have any problems working in MS-DOS. To run the MS-DOS versions of backup and anti-virus checking, you will need to use the MS-DOS tools group that was created to select these programs.

4. Backups made with CPBACKUP cannot be restored with MSBACKUP. Since CPBACKUP will operate normally in MS-DOS, there is no need to use MSBACKUP. If you must use MSBACKUP, however, then you should do a complete backup of your system using MSBACKUP and keep your CPBACKUP diskettes in a safe place in case you might need them.

5. Information about the use of Aptiva tools will remain in the system and will not be replaced by anything in the MS-DOS installation. You should thus be ready to make allowances for situations where the help or information files in the system refer to the PC-DOS functions and you are forced to try and locate similar functions in MS-DOS for specific help.
