TP 701 - American vs. EMEA models

Description:
What are the main differences between the American and European 701's ?
Solution:
The main difference is that the American machine has a DSP Chip.
The DSP is NOT MWAVE. It uses an AT&T DSP Chip built into a DataRace fax/modem.
FAX/MODEM
The speed on the modem is 19.2 Kbps and the speed CANNOT be upgraded. Does NOT support V.23(France) even with French DAA interface.
Uses Hayes Ultra AT Command set. Does NOT support Cellular phones. The modem is Class 1 only. Supports CCITT Group 3(G3) Fax

AUDIO
The DSP is not used for audio. The 701 uses an ESS 688 chipset. It is 100% SoundBlaster Pro & SoundBlaster compatible stereo audio.
IBM provides drivers for Windows (no DOS drivers) - don't use any other SoundBlaster drivers. It uses base I/O address A20 which will conflict
with token-ring adapters if audio is enabled.
TELEPHONE
Class 8 voice commands capable.
Full & half duplex speakerphone operation capable.
Answering machine (with voice messaging & remote message retrieval).
The modem uses its internal DSP to overcome acoustic feedback.
Unlike the MWAVE modem there is no drivers for the AT&T DSP. This is enabled within the BIOS. In the External Power Mode you can set the
Modem power to ON/OFF. In the Active Port Settings - User Port Setting you can set address and IRQ.
The BIOS of this machine is the same as the EMEA machine, with the inclusion of the modem setting, thus the same BIOS upgrades can be used on
both machines. This can be accessed by FN+F1.
With Faxworks you need to install the correct version which is specifically for the US ThinkPad 701.
