Aptiva - 2163/2164 No Video
Applicable to: Canada, United States
Symptom:
When you turn the machine on, you will not see a normal IBM logo screen. The screen will remain blank and you will not hear any error beeps.
Solution:
1. Check Power connections.
- Be sure there is power to the system unit.
- The power light on the system unit should come on when the power button is pressed
- Be sure there is power to the monitor.
- The power light on the monitor should indicate operation when the power button is pressed. Note that the color of the indicator light may change depending on monitor status.
2. Check video connection.
- Be sure that the monitor is connected to the back of the system.
- Check to be sure that there are no bent pins in the monitor connector.
- Reseat the monitor connection to assure a good connection.
- If applicable, be sure the video cable is connected to the back of the monitor. (Some monitors have detachable video cables.)
- Check to be sure that there are no bent pins in the monitor connector.
- Reseat the monitor connection to assure a good connection.
3. If possible, attach the system to a monitor which is known to work. (This will rule out a fault in the monitor.)
4. Confirm that the video card is firmly seated in the machine
- Open the system and reseat the video adapter in its slot. (This will require removing the retaining screw from the card bracket.)
5. Apply RVFLSH.EXE to the system to update the video BIOS. This file can be obtained directly from the web by clicking here -
. You can also go to http://www.pc.ibm.com/searchfiles.html and search on the file name RVFLSH.EXE.
5. In order to download and apply the file, follow these instructions:
- Download the RVFLSH.EXE file to your hard drive. (remember where it is saved)
- Change to the directory where the file was downloaded and execute the file.
- The program will execute and prompt the user to insert a blank, formatted diskette.
- Follow the instructions on the screen to create the diskette.
- Once the diskette is created, insert the diskette into the failing machine and turn on the system. The diskette will boot the system and automatically apply the video BIOS update. When the video BIOS is successfully updated, you will hear one beep. If the video BIOS update is unsuccessful there you will hear three beeps.
- After you hear the single beep, remove the diskette and turn the system off. The update is complete.
- If the video BIOS update was not successful, extract RVFLSH.EXE to another, different diskette and attempt the update again.
6. If no video appears after following all of the above steps, it is likely that a fault exists in the video adapter. The video adapter should be replaced.
