Servers - Windows NT blue screen data that needs to be captured

Applicable to: World-Wide

Data that needs to be captured when a Windows NT Blue or Black screen appears:

1. Document the exact error message on the screen, specifically the first 5 lines, for example:
*** STOP: 0x0000000A (0x00000000,0x00000000,0x00000000,0x00000000)
IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL
The second line may have a brief message. All stop codes have 4 parameters, and depending on the stop code, the parameters may have meaning.

See the Knowledge Base for an explanation of all the Blue Screen error codes:http://w3.pc.ibm.com/helpcenter/infotips/
Select the item titled "Support Search" on the left. (If you do not have a User ID, follow the instructions in red.)

2. A memory.dmp file should be standard operating procedure. The procedure on how to obtain a memory dump can be found in Hint and Tip Number SCOD-46CR7G.
With systems having large amounts of memory, the size of the memory.dmp files is becoming quite large. Even when compressed, they may not fit on a CD-ROM. Add the option of using a spare hardfile to contain the dump, and ship the hardfile to IBM support.

3. Hotfixes - Hotfixes should only be applied when the situation warrants. Some knowledge of the hotfixes should be known during the planning phase for a new system installation, and those hotfixes that have resulted in success for other customers should be installed for similar configurations. For example, if a customer is using SPX, there is a specific hotfix for SPX and certain network adapters (Token Ring, 3com 3c980, etc). SP4 is recommend and includes most fixes. 4. Instructions on the best way to set up NT recommend partition size that makes troubleshooting easier......Do you need a separate partition for dump, etc?
