Crossbrand - Storing more than 244 files on a diskette
Applicable to: World-Wide
Symptom:
Unable to store more than 224 files on a diskette or unable to put more files on a diskette even though it is not full.
Solution:
Do not store the files in the root directory of the diskette. Instead, create a sub directory and store them there.
Explanation:
Each entry for a file in the file allocation table occupies 32 bytes minimum. This may be larger if long file names instead of 8.3 file names are used. 16 of these 32 byte entries may be made on each diskette sector. On a diskette, there are 14 sectors set aside for these entries. Therefore, if 8.3 file names are used, the maximum number of entries that may be made is 224.
