IBM Monitors - External/stand alone attachments on a ThinkPad under Windows 95

Applicable to: World-Wide

Problem :
If external monitor is attached to a stand alone system running Windows 95, to put the machine into 1024x768 mode requires that you set the monitor type in display settings to a monitor type that supports 1024x768. i.e. SVGA 1024x768. After doing that, if the machine is booted without the monitor attached you will get an error indicating that the monitor type you have selected is not supported on your machine.

Machines Tested: Thinkpad 560 and 760e

Machines Affected: All Thinkpads in which the maximum LCD resolution is less than the resolution that will be run on the external monitor.

O/S Tested: DOS/Win, OS/2, Windows 95

O/S Affected: Windows 95

Fix :
No IBM solution, Win95 does not set up a different profile for "Monitor Attached" and "No monitor attached" Note: this would not be a problem if the monitor was attached to a docking station as Win95 sets up a new profile for a docked configuration.

Work Around: Boot machine up without monitor attached and verify that monitor settings are set correctly.

Go to System Properties --> Hardware profiles, and rename the current profile to something appropriate like "No Monitor Attached" or Home Configuration" Then choose "Copy" and name the second profile "Monitor Attached" or "Work Configuration"

Doing this will force the user to choose which configuration they wish to use each time they boot Win95.

Plug the Monitor in and boot the machine using the "Monitor Attached" configuration and set the display properties to the appropriate settings.

This will give the user two separate profiles with separate display properties.
