Aptiva - ConfigSafe on Windows 98 pre-loaded systems

Applicable to: World-Wide

The ConfigSafe utility is intended to help Aptiva owners restore their system to a working condition WITHOUT using the Recovery CD to restore the entire pre-loaded software. The program identifies the changes users and installation programs make to system configurations and determines when those changes occurred. ConfigSafe does this by making a backup copy of the configuration information; the backup copy is called a snapshot. ConfigSafe can use the snapshots to restore the system to a working configuration and identify the changes made to the current configuration.

The program will take snapshots automatically every week, so it is not necessary to make routine snapshots. It is a VERY good idea to make snapshots if you are installing any new hardware or software. For best results, take a snapshot before installing the new product, and give the snapshot a useful name (the default name is very generic). Then install your new product and take a second shapshot once you have verified that the product is installed and working. The "Before" snapshot can be used to fix the system if the new product caused a problem. The "After" snapshot can be used to restore the system to working condition some time in the future, leaving the product correctly installed.

If a problem prevents you from getting into Windows, there is a way to restore a snapshot from DOS. Boot your system with the Recovery CD, and do not select the option to restore your original pre-loaded software. Go to the DOS prompt and type the following commands:

C:

CD C:\CSAFE

SOS

This will restore the last snapshot. Unlike the Windows version, the DOS command does not have an undo feature, but since the previous configuration was not working, this should not be a problem.

There is an option in ConfigSafe to enable a password. If your computer is shared with other people (especially children), it is a very good idea to enable the password. This will prevent another computer user from restoring a snapshot by accident.
