Aptiva-PS/1 - What is extended memory?

Applicable to: World-Wide

Extended memory is referred to as the range of memory addresses in your system above 1.0 MB. The range of memory addresses from 0-640 K is referred to as conventional memory. The 384K block from 640 K - 1.0 MB is reserved for system uses, such as video display buffers and BIOS.

The amount of extended memory you have on your system depends on which model you own and whether you have added any RAM to your system. A system with 4 MB (4096 K) of RAM has 3072 K of extended memory (4096 K - 1024 K = 3072 K). The ability to use extended memory depends on the software you are using. Many software applications are only designed to address conventional memory (0-640K). Some newer Windows based applications take advantage of extended memory.

(1MB = 1024 K = 1024000 bytes)
